Curved boogie board?

Asked by metadog (378points) September 3rd, 2013

Hi! I bought a Morey Boogie Board back in the early 80’s. It has been with me to the beach more times than I can count. The thing is, over time it has gone from being a flat piece of styrofoam to being bent (at least I don’t remember buying it with a curve).

Imagine if you put each end on a block and put something heavy in the middle. I can only guess that the combination of salt water, heat, cold and improper care have caused this. The board has lived in my garage for years.

Sure, I am a bit nostalgic, and a bit cheap, but I would hate to get rid of it. I would really like to hand it down to my son, unfortunately he is turned off by the curve, “but, none of the other boards on the beach are curved.” Is there a way to straighten it out? Thoughts?

Is it EPO foam? Does this help?

Different question. How does the curved-end board work? Is it better or worse than a flat board would be. If occurs to me that a curved board with a lower middle would have a lower center of gravity which might help the ride.

Hmmm… I don’t know what the old Morey Boogie Board’s were made out of, specifically. Still looking into it, though.

As to the curvature… I don’t remember buying it that way (though it has been a loooooong time). Suffice to say, I have not seen ANY boards on the beach or in the surf shops that are curved these days. If that was a “thing” back then… It isn’t now! LOL!

Both my average boogie boards have a mild curve. The are both foam and one has an extra, thin layer on top (smoother surface, easy on the skin) and the other has thin layers top and bottom.
I think that curve helps you avoid burying the nose into either the water or sand.

The reason for this is from use. Over time pressure from your weight and the pressure of the water beneath the board will slowly warp the board.

How do you store it? That may also have something to do with it.
