What do you think about this statement about the danger of a robot army?

In a recent interview promoting his reboot of “RoboCop”, Director José Padilha said: “I actually had a take (which is the premise of the current movie), which is we’re in the future, and drones have been replaced by robots and are being used all over the world for foreign policy and war. Kind of like instead of sending soldiers to Iraq, you send robots to Tehran. This is how we open the movie, with American robots in Tehran, because Iran has been invaded. The idea is, now soldiers don’t die in wars, so there’s no political pressure at home to end wars. Because the reason why the Vietnam War ended is because soldiers were dying. When you take the soldiers away and you have robots, that opens a can of worms.” Source
I was struck by the position he took. Would robot soldiers result in longer wars, since there would be no outcry from the Nation to end the war, and bring the boys back home?

You’re only going change the way folks feel about the casualties of war by getting rid of visual media. Even if our own soldiers aren’t dying, YouTube videos depicting the human damage we are doing with drones would raise more than a few humanitarian hackles.

It’s interesting and only time will tell for sure but that isn’t the reality quite yet.

Maybe if they used peace loving bots with the voice of Liberace, then we may see an end to this madness they call war sobs uncontrollably.
The downside being the decadence displayed in trying financial times, also fucking terrible cheesy muzak.

It wasn’t so much American boys dying as it was conscripted American boys dying that was a major part of the opposition to Vietnam. That, and the fact we had no real good reason to be there and that we had no way we would ever win it.

There has been nowhere near that kind of opposition to any conflict since, because the debate of each action has been more about the cost in treasure than in human lives.

People dying from robots would be so appalling, it might hasten the end of such a war.
