Tattoos inspired by current relationships?

Asked by zander101 (635points) September 22nd, 2013

Couple things I have learned in my young life, is nothing lasts forever and nothing is never what it seems. At one time in my life I was a huge advocate of getting tattoos, as I got older the interest dwindled, but still have respect for the artform as I see it as one’s way to express themselves. However, I’m very skeptical when people get tattoos of friend’s name on themselves and wear so proudly only until a couple of months, weeks or perhaps years later, they have a falling out and are no longer existing in eachother’s orbit. I feel true relationships withstand the tests of time with love ingrained in the involved individuals, getting tattoos of friends that you “haven’t gone through life’s trauma with” seems to me childish. Now I know some of you may respond well, some relationships due go through tests of life and do not last. That is true, however I feel that there should be serious contemplation involved before inking yourself with someone’s name and make sure that you know them inside out before having the tattoo created, which is permanent.

I’m a big believer in no names, period. One exception might be an offspring. I’d like to have a tat in honour of my son, but something he draws himself, rather than his name.

Thank you @Seek_Kolinahr I agree 110%. There so many different types of relationships that I feel people should look out for and honestly getting tattoos of current friends to me seem far-fetched maybe the only consideration I’ll have in this is if the person is deceased, beacuse I feel that’s an amazing way to keep some part of themselves alive so to speak, but for this instance c’mon I feel like yelling “hey, hold up, you sure you want to do this, can you really ask yourself if this friendship has been potent enough to go this route”. But I learned some things you just don’t say Thank God for Fluther.

No, I don’t think it’s a good idea.

Being an older adult I’m not too fond of tattooing at all, but am open-minded enough to realize it is a culture that young people are involved in for means of expression. I have a niece with BPD who is totally covered in tattoos, from her face & neck down to her toes. I find these tattoos have really ruined her attractiveness. I also have a nephew in prison who got many tattoos while incarcerated and ended up with Hep B at age 24. As far as having a friend’s name tattooed, I don’t agree with; especially in young people. Friendships are found, lost and redefined all the time and especially in young people. This is a normal part of life, during maturation young people develop into individualistic entities and if a friendship ends because of conflicting ideas a person could end up with a person’s name tattooed for life. That same friend could one day become a foe!

There is a tattoo curse. Once you get your SO’s name tattooed on your body, the relationship is doomed to fail.
My fiancé and I considered it, the guy that did our tats strongly advised us against it.
We went with matching tattoos instead.

I agree that it’s a really bad idea to brand somebody’s name on your body.

I will go with @Katniss on this one it’s a bad idea to use a name for a tattoo, I know what I am talking about, had to remove the wife’s name from my wrist, now it’s a very ugly scar and everybody thought I tried to kill myself or something like that.

@antimatter That really blows. Was it not possible to get a cover up tat?

antimatter's avatar

Nope @Katniss just had to get it off! Any could not find a reasonable tattoo to describe the ex… :-)

@antimatter I’ve seen tattoos where people have had “Void” or “Slut” put over their ex’s name. Kind of humorous, but I can see where it may not be a great thing to walk around with Slut on your wrist for the rest of your life.

I think it’s a really bad idea, for all the reasons already mentioned. Stick with symbols that are personal to you, regardless of who you’re involved in a realtionship with.

I think it is a horrible idea, though I have had an idea of getting my daughter’s name on my wrist. As for anyone else, not in this life time!! I think to do such a thing is much like asking for trouble. But hey, to each his or her own.

Ha ha @Katniss that’s hilarious!
