Senator Ted Cruz, a god or a demagogue?

Asked by ETpro (34605points) September 25th, 2013

Ted Cruz, the Republican junior senator from Texas and Tea Party firebrand, is now in his 20th hour of filibustering to prevent the continuing resolution to fund the US Government from October 1 forward from being passed with funding for the Affordable Care Act. He says the ACA would be worse than turning Darth Vader loose on Earth. It will end America as we know it. We don’t need to fund the government and pay our bills anyway.

If we fail to raise the debt limit, bond agencies will lower our credit ratings, which means the interest rate on our existing debt will rise, and all future borrowing will cost far more.

Ia the ACA that bad? Is Cruz being a god or a demagogue? What do you expect to come of all this?

He’s a fool.

This is all about self-aggrandizement and being the republican nominee in 2016. The republicans aren’t going to nominate him no matter what, because of his lack of maturity, his offensiveness, and the fact that he is too far right for even the republicans to stomach. The fact that he was born in Canada doesn’t help, either.

If we look at Cruz in a couple of years, we’ll see a person who had his 20 minutes of fame and is now a pitiful shell of a man. But right now, he’s like a bright light bulb that attracts moths, and then burns them up.

He’s not preventing anything, he’s just pushing it back, at most, though Reid already said it’s set for 1 today. It’s not a filibuster. The vote will only be delayed if he tries to deny cloture after 1pm today, and he cannot continue until then (the chambers adjourn at noon, regardless), and he almost certainly doesn’t have the votes to manage that (and, again, what he does now has nothing to do with that cloture vote).

Aka, what @elbanditoroso said, this is the Ted Cruz trying to show off for… no apparent reason other then trying to take some spotlight from Rand for for stupid trick of the year.

Will it accomplish anything, maybe not. It’s hard for me to fault someone for taking a principled stand against all odds. As with most political activities these days, it’s not about the issue but rather the person. If you like the ACA, Cruz is a grandstanbding politician. If you don’t like it, he’s taking a stand that needs to be brought to light.

If you truly believe that the ACA will be detrimental to the country, should you just shut up and let it happen? Or maybe fight with every tool available to stop it. I can’t understand those that say ‘let it fail and the Democrats will be hung with it’. If you believe it will fail, you should do everything possible to stop it before it creates even more pain for the country. Frankly I believe his motives are good and I applaud his action, win, lose, or draw. Calling him a God might be a bit of a stretch.

Cruz is a walking, breathing, babbling symbol of everything that’s wrong with the Tea Party and politics in general, destructive, not constructive. He’s strictly out for himself and the narrow-minded voters he needs to keep him in office.

An idiot.

@Jaxk I could understand that more if his filibuster was actually going to accomplish anything. Still wouldn’t agree with the political motivations, naturally, but at least it would have a point.

“Cruz gained recognition at 2:41 p.m. Tuesday, aiming, perhaps, to best the nearly 13 hours of floor control that Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., had earlier this year in protest of the Obama administration’s drone policy. In Paul’s case, however, the Senate was not yet operating under a pending cloture motion, meaning that his long speech actually did delay Senate proceedings. (Majority Whip Richard J. Durbin, D-Ill., couldn’t file a cloture motion until after Paul stopped.)...

Despite the length of the speech, Majority Leader Harry Reid has been insistent (and correct, under the rules) that Cruz and his supporters aren’t really filibustering anything.

Emphasis mine.

A politician playing to his rather limited base

He’s a joke in a Joe McCarthy haircut.

Cruz got over 39% of his funds that can be accounted for from out of state and national superpacs provided over $3.8 million for his seat in the senate. To these people and the millions of conservative Texans he is a hero. To the rest of the nation, including many thinking Texans, he is a goat and an embarrassment.

Cruz is a 2016 Presidential candidate. I can’t wait, mostly to see Bill Murray play him on SNL.

@filmfann Dunno about that, it sounds like the entire party hates him. But I guess he can dream.

@elbanditoroso I don’t think he’s a fool, but as to self aggrandizement, he has done and said enough things to make my question, god or demagogue an obvious one to ask.

@BhacSsylan Good point. his antics aren’t going to a accomplish anything legislatively. So what could be the point. Ted Cruz promoting Ted Cruz?

@Jaxk As noted above in his losing Supreme Court battle, he does seem to be deeply committed to taking healthcare away form all who aren’t in his league.

@Pachyderm_In_The_Room He does seem to be a caricature of the greed and rot that has destroyed the one “Grand” Old Party.

@syz Definitely not an idiot. He’s a Harvard Law graduate who wouldn’t even associate with students from “lesser” ivy league schools. They were beneath his preeminence. Not an idiot, a demagogue I think.

@Neodarwinian That’s clearly true. And the good news is it’s a limited base that grows more limited with each new abuse like this one.

@glacial I think the guy is channeling Joe McCarthy. The snarl, the self aggrandizement, the litany of lies accusing others of being un-American when it is he who holds the democratic process in disdain. It the death and birth dates were congruent, it would almost be enough to make me believe in reincarnation.

@rojo His whole thrust is to help the billionaires and major multinational corporations. Only 95% of the gains after the great recession his Republicans gave us under Bush have gone to the wealthiest 1%. That’s not nearly enough. Cruz wants to make sure it’s 110%.

@filmfann I’m definitely up for seeing that too.

Look at this brilliant Jon Stewart bit on Cruz and you’ll realize he’s neither god nor demagogue—he’s an idiot.

rojo's avatar

So, the bill passed 100 – 0. Does that mean Cruz voted FOR the damned thing anyway after his 21 hour rambling rant?

rojo's avatar

Also, I note how the media is going on about how many tweets, etc there were with the words “Ted Cruz” in them and how this is a positive thing that is a good sign for Cruz.
Do they not even consider the idea that some people may have been tuning in just to see the train wreck and not because they support his cause?

Evidently not.

Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself.
Mark Twain,

I believe you could not find a more apt example of this quote.

“Senator Ted Cruz, a god or a demagogue?” Well, one thing is for sure: You are neither…

Welcome to Fluther, @Yes_Indeed. And while I have been called many things in my long life, those are two I’ve never been accused of being. :-)
