Are you a boss?

Do you have the power and ability to delegate? Can you handle lots and lots of responsibility? Do you care about money more than feelings? Are you a 1%er?

I’m a manager, with a small degree of power and lots of delegating. I don’t make much money, and care about feelings a whole lot more than money. I’m so far from a ‘one percenter’ it’s laughable!

I was a manager and not very good at it. Now I’m a peon someplace else and much happier.

I recently retired from my position as a senior creative manager, a role I’d held at various ad agencies and large companies for many years. In the beginning I was a lousy manager but eventually grew into an experienced and generally well regarded one. But as I grew older, I lost my appetite for managing others. Walking away from it probably added a few years to my lifespan.

I have the ability to organize and run things, but I don’t like my bossy self, so I avoid it in social situations with my peers. In a classroom, it was different. Once I established that I was running things, I could relax and use humor to ameliorate the onerous (to the kids) requirements. That was fun. We got along well together.

I am a boss. Of me. (We sub out almost everything).

when I am at work, at home I have another boss

I am a partner rather than a boss, although I do have the ability to delegate tasks to others.

My husband and I do fall into the top 10% of wage earners, but we are currently supplementing expenses for a dozen family members.

Most of the so-called 99%er don’t even realize that world wide they are actually 1 %ers.

I’ve been a manager or VP for many years and now run my own business. The idea that it’s an either/or money or feelings situation is ludicrous. I’ve hired people and fired people but not because of money (stealing would be the exception). I’ve never paid minimum wage but I’ve earned minimum wage. Frankly I’m not sure what money vs. feelings you’re talking about. When I fired anyone it has always been because they are impacting others by not doing thier job. Who’s feelings are we talking about, Fred because he can’t manage to show up at work or Sue that has to work a double shift because Fred wasn’t there?

I was a manager for 8 years but managed only three other people, peers of mine except in this special arena. I was almost primus unter pares, and we all had fun. The instutition was nonprofit, I should mention, and had goals other than the almighty dollar.

Most of the time in the past, I had preferred being the Indian rather than the chief.

I don’t enjoy telling people what to do neither do I enjoy being told what to do.

I do it because I have to but sometimes, in the construction trade, I feel like an underpaid babysitter.

Yes, yes, no, no.

Can anyone beat 2 yes’? Besides me.

Nah. I’m a follower. However, I’m not blind, and I’ll only follow if I deem that doing so will be worth it. I guess unless I’m at work, not really a choice there, although I have quit jobs because my principles got in the way. Stupid principles.
I prefer doing my own thing though. Following sucks, and leading sucks, although I’ve never really done any leading. The responsibility, as well as others depending on me isn’t a feeling I like. I have been a moderator and sub admin on a few forums some time ago, but that felt different. My job was to enforce certain rules, but there was no decision making here, so I could handle that. As for my admin positions, (tow to speak of) my job was behind the scenes, messing with websites, rather than with the people in them, and as I was not the owner of the site, I was taking directions from the owner, which was cool. But to hell with being a leader. Don’t have it in me. I’d be like fucking Neron or something.

I have managed up to 28 people, but am not working now. I loved being a manager. I delegated a lot, but I did a tremendous amount of supporting my staff as well, and knew how to do their jobs. I was regularly moved to new departments and always increased sales. I did not care about money more than feelings. But, my staff and I were very loyal to each other and cared about the business. Treating the people well was paying attention to money, because they often did above and beyond. They worked extremely hard.

syz's avatar

Yes, yes, yes, no, no.

jerv's avatar

Not any more if I can avoid it, but I am often the power behind the throne. I take on lots of responsibility, but none for people, and as little as possible dealing with people. People suck. But having the power to make or break people is nice, and I often have that power.

I am not a greedy man, though if I can’t pay my bills, odds are I’ll be seeking employment elsewhere. I work to live; I don’t live to work. And I don’t have any real desire for mansions and Maseratis. Money is mostly unimportant to me so long as I have enough to have a happy life.

@Jaxk I think it was along the lines of, “How miserable would you make yourself for the sake of money?”.

CWOTUS's avatar

I’ve managed before… like a boss.

Jaxk's avatar

@jerv

Thanks, I obviously wasn’t getting the point. Now that you’ve steered me in a new direction, I’m not sure it makes anymore sense. If you like what you’re doing, more money doesn’t make you miserable. If you don’t like what your doing, more money doesn’t make you happy. I enjoyed management and I enjoyed the extra money as well,

I’m a parent of three, does that count?

Do you have the power and ability to delegate? Yes
Can you handle lots and lots of responsibility? Yes
Do you care about money more than feelings? No. I would work outside of the home if I cared about money more than feelings.
Are you a 1%er? No

@CWOTUS So happy you went there (NSFW video)

JLeslie's avatar

I forgot about the 1% part until I just saw @jonsblond‘s answer. Do you mean top 1% in income? I wonder what that has to do with being a manager?

DWW25921's avatar

No. Yes. Yes. Yes. No.

viragorider's avatar

@JLeslie yes, income wise. I never said anything about being a manager. You’re either a boss or your not.

viragorider's avatar

It takes 370k a year to be in the top 1%. In case anyone was wondering.

JLeslie's avatar

@viragorider Oh, you mean an owner? That was not clear to me. I was a manager, which means I was the boss of my staff in my book. They answered directly or indirectly to me.

viragorider's avatar

@JLeslie plenty of owners aren’t bosses. A lot of them inherit what they have.

JLeslie's avatar

@viragorider So, just to clarify, you are interested in people who are both owners and bosses?

viragorider's avatar

@JLeslie do you listen to Lonely Island or Rick Ross?

talljasperman's avatar

No, last time I was an executive I was in high school. I was human resources manager for a pretend company called Out To Lunch. We made reusable denim lunch bags. We sold a total of six bags, I bought them all and gave them to family.

cookieman's avatar

Are you a boss?
*Yes. Technically, I’m a director or a chair (I dislike the term “boss”). I currently manage 20 professors and oversee about 200 students. I’ve been a “boss” for about twelve years.

Do you have the power and ability to delegate?
Yes, but my primary responsibility, in my opinion, is to create an environment where my employees can do a great job.

Can you handle lots and lots of responsibility?
Yes, oodles.

Do you care about money more than feelings?
Neither, I care about getting things done – efficiently, effectively – so as to make other people’s jobs easier – so they can get things done. I don’t particularly care about feelings, and while I don’t make a ton of cabbage, I do okay.

Are you a 1%er?
Nope. Are you?

JLeslie's avatar

@viragorider I don’t think so. Why?

jonsblond's avatar

@JLeslie Lonely Island does a song called Like a Boss. It’s a song about being a boss. It’s a pretty funny song, too. I linked to it in my answer. @viragorider was actually on topic when he was speaking of Lonely Island. Don’t know why that was removed.

Blondesjon's avatar

Yep. Cared a lot at first now I don’t care at all.

spoiler alert: it is different

livelaughlove21's avatar

A boss or a boss?

Either way, no.

YARNLADY's avatar

Anyone earning over $34,000 is in the 1% richest people in the world, and over ½ half of them live in the U. S.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

I am a boss, and owner. I don’t believe it’s fair of you @viragorider to automatically connect that title to ”...care about money more than feelings? Are you a 1%er?”.

Such a perception has no clue how to employ homeless folk.

Now I have a question for you.
Are you doing a survey, or are you one of those lazy punk ass teenage snot nose whiners?

oneSasyRN's avatar

Yessssssssssssss…...sometimes I wish I could just be a Walmart greeter….but it’s who I am at work.
