What to do at your eighteenth birthday?

Asked by Amo101 (151points) October 5th, 2013

I am making 18 eighteen and I have no idea what so ever what I am going to do.
Any ideas on what I can do?

P.S I do not drink so drinking is out of the subject.

I highly recommend doing something outdoors that is unusual. There are many options like hiking in the woods, camping in the woods or in the backyard, riding off-road bicycles on appropriate paths. or building a campfire and telling ghost stories.

If doing something outdoors is not an option and you have to stay indoors, then I suggest playing games that can involve a lot of people. Trivia games or charades come to mind. You can make a game of cooking something together where each individual gets to add an ingredient to the mix.

Are you in the U.S.? Then:

1. Register to vote!
2. Register for the draft. (Even though the draft ended 40 years ago, you still have to register.)
3. Go somewhere where you have to be an adult, even if it’s just for a minute!
4. And finally, spend time with your favorite people, eat some good food, have a birthday dessert. Cake and ice cream, pie and ice cream whatever you want, you’re an adult!

Happy Birthday!

Happy eighteenth birthday, @Amo101. Do whatever you think might be fun…just skip the alcohol.

Where do you live? Near any nature wonders? Beaches, waterfalls, lakes, rainforests, tropical gardens?

(The idiom is I am turning eighteen. And so drinking is off the table, or drinking will not enter into any of my plans.)

Happy birthday! What can you do when you are 18 that you couldn’t do the day before you become 18? Exclude drinking and see what other benefits you get for being an adult. I think you’ll find there aren’t many things that are fun. It’s mostly about being a responsible adult. So just enjoy your birthday any way you want to.

Strip Club!
Wait, or is that 21?
Anyway, Happy Birthday!

If you are staying indoors, you could play games such as Pictionary or Quelf.

For one of my landmark birthdays, considerably after the 18th, I celebrated by taking a balloon ride. If you can split the cost with a few friends, the cost per person should not be too bad.

When I was 18 I would have gone out dancing with friends.

If you live near a port you could take a three day cruise with a friend. Swim, dance, eat, maybe snorkel or some sort of adventure like ziplining.

You are all cracking me up. Do something adult!

You don’t drink now because you’re not 18 but once you’re 18 you can drink (assuming you’re not living in some far right puritanical hell hole).

Picnic in a park and hike with friends?

JLeslie's avatar

@Lightlyseared In the US drinking age is 21. I’m 45 and I don’t drink. I didn’t do it on my 18th or 21st birthday (I actually lived next a city where the drinking age was 18 when I was 18).

The OP doesn’t need to drink, and if she is inclined not to all the better. She can have plenty of fun without it.

Go volunteer at an Old Folks Home, the SPCA, or another charity. Then go to the strip club.

@JLeslie guess you didn’t read what was in the brackets did you.

@Lightlyseared I don’t know why it matters what you wrote in parantheses? Your saying if your legal go drink, and I am saying I don’t care if it is legal or not, no need to drink. Personally, I don’t know many drinking people who waited until it was legal anyway. Certainly the kids who liked to drink made sure they drank when they became legal though, even though they had always been drinking anyway.

Plus, the OP specifically said she doesn’t drink, why are so many people suggesting she does it? I really don’t get it.

Lightlyseared's avatar

Because in the rest of the known world drinking at 18 isn’t such a big deal.

JLeslie's avatar

@Lightlyseared It was when I turned 18 also (the age was just starting to change in the US when I was in high school). Now in the US 21 is the big drinking age, so let’s pretend the OP was turning 21. So? My first answer is still the same. The point is the OP doesn’t drink, she ddn’t say I don’t drink because it is illegal. I’m going to guess you do drink. Fairly regularly. I realize I could be wrong, but you seem to be unable to fathom some people don’t. I’m not calling you an alcoholic or anything, just saying it seems from what you said you can’t imagine some people actually choose not to drink during a celebration even if they can.

For us nondrinkers it’s annoying when people who do drink try to get us to. You have your alcohol, I’ll have my Coke.
