Should I take the ACT again?

Asked by sarahhughes1996 (127points) October 16th, 2013

I took the ACT last month and got a 25. However, in order to get direct admission into the college of nursing at the university I want to go to, I need a 28. Is it worth taking again? Will my scores improve that much, provided I study like crazy?

You have nothing left to lose except $37. Try at least once more. Universities cherry-pick the highest scores.

It would be a stretch. According to the ACT site, the average increase on the second try for someone who scored 25 on the first try is one point. Getting a 28 on the second try would put you in the upper 25% of retakers. So yeah, not impossible by any means, but quite a challenge.

It’s either retake it or not get into your college of choice. So, yes, retake it.

I may have stated my description in a way that made it seem like that is my only way of getting into the college. My options are getting a 28 ACT score or getting a 4.0 GPA my freshman year of college.

@sarahhughes1996 That’s a lot of pressure, and quite a risk to take. What are your grades like in high school?

I just think if you don’t retake it and end up not being able to get that 4.0, you’ll regret not retaking it now.

A few dollars is all you have to lose. Why not do it?

Definitely take it again. At the very least you won’t improve. I took it a second time without studying and my score improved 5 points. I got a full-tuition scholarship for 8 semesters from that. You have nothing to loose.

I would take a couple of prep courses then retake it. The tough college is well worth it. I went from a pissant little public school to an Ivy League school and that was a bitch, but I treasure every experience I got from it.
