I am having problems with, "C++ for Dummies", can you help me download the compiler?

Asked by talljasperman (21916points) October 21st, 2013

The for dummies book is 2009 and I have a laptop i5 core processor 4 gigs ram and 500 GB storage, windows 8. I purchased a portable dvd//cd player seeing I forgot to check if the computer had one. Would the free C++ program from the book work on my laptop?

Why not? Have you even tried to install it?

Also, how does your i5 laptop not have a disc drive?

I had an older edition of the C++ For Dummies book years ago. At that time the software provided by the book was MinGW which is available for download from Sourceforge. It should work fine with your computer.

If you are going to be working with it, I strongly recommend installing Cygwin as well, because it provides some nice utilities.

@rexacoracofalipitorius – why MinGW? Why Cygwin? There are any number of (native Windows) C and C++ compilers without having to install a Linux environment.

I think that @talljasperman‘s reference to “i5” means Intel 5…

@elbanditoroso MinGW because that’s what is in the book. Cygwin because I like Cygwin- it has lots of useful features, and you don’t have to use any of them.
MinGW is a native Win32 compiler. It’s for Windows. It’s in the name.
Also, yes, I assume that i5 means Intel Core i5 in this context, and that’s certainly an arch for which gcc can build, so that’s good.

@talljasperman has a cd/dvd drive, having purchased one. I recommended downloading the program so that @talljasperman would have a current version rather than the outdated one on the disc.
