What's the strangest thing you've ever heard of?

Asked by newtscamander (2843points) October 22nd, 2013

An invention that seems completely useless to you? A crazy new or old fashion? A weird thought somebody had? Behaviour that just doesn’t make any sense to you at all?

Seriously- Not to troll, but the idea that laying off government workers in a depression will increase economic activity somehow makes my head explode.

The strangest is also the most disturbing and most disgusting. And it is definitely NSFW and NSF decent people.

A friend was staying at a hotel in Amsterdam for vacation, and as you know drug use is legal there. He did some, and he went back to his hotel. Then he noticed all these little men, walking around the hotel. Tons of them! Checking in, out, drinking, talking laughing! He was so terrified, he called his parents back in London. When he was on the phone his parents were telling him to relax, go to his room and take a deep breathe. They thought he did way too much cocaine or something- parent worry-. He grabbed 2 of the little men violently and sweating, and took pictures and sent it to his parents.

Turns out it was a dwarf-fest in Amsterdam. lol.

@zenvelo While the idea is disturbing, it’s executed so poorly, riddled with generic slasher clichés that the whole thing just seemed ridiculous to me. The movie destroyed its own mood. I still enjoyed it though. I am far from decent, I admit. :)

@zenvelo, I couldn’t agree with you more about “The Human Centipede.” A couple of years ago I watched about half of it and then turned it off in disgust, vowing never to watch it or its sequel. I’ve certainly seen my share of movies filled with blood and gore, but THC makes ‘em look like Disney.

The Human Centipede might qualify for me if it was real. But since it’s not, I’d have to say quantum entanglement. It was so strange no less an intellect than Albert Einstein scoffed at it, calling it “Spooky Action at a Distance.” That, it is, but experiment after experiment has verified that Einstein was wrong and the weirdness of quantum entanglement, even across light years of separation, is real.

Some guy on my roof in the middle of the night, tearing off my satellite dish because he’s convinced someone is after him.

That was definitely strange. Maybe not the strangest, but it’s what most readily comes to mind.

@ETpro That’s really cool! But the animated people in that were seriously in the uncanny valley.

The strangest thing I’ve turned up is probably User 927 (NSFW.) AOL accidentally publicized a bunch of people’s search terms, and this person’s searches are like a peek into the sordid depths of the human soul.

Thought so too @Imadethisupwithnoforethought
@zenvelo Seeing the cover of the dvd freaked me out….definitely very strange!
@jaytkay -I can’t even begin to try to understand such huge numbers – seems impossible that the earth is so small…but so interesting to think about everything ‘out there’ :)
@illusionslies that story reminds me of the movie ‘In Bruges’, have you seen it?
@ETpro can always count on you to add some interesting facts to a thread. Also, extremely strange animated characters…had never heard of the uncanny valley before (really interesting by the way, @Haleth….an User 927 seems…strange!) but they definitely qualify…..
@Nimis was he afraid they could track him down using your satellite dish? What about his own? Or didn’t he have one?
@ucme is that really a thing?
@Sueanne_Tremendous Diva Muffin is also an interesting name…didn’t we have a thread about strange names a few months back? I think I might have asked that question. Not sure though.
@SadieMartinPaul I just read the Wiki article on her and learned that she’s a so-called celebutante….didn’t know the term!

@Haleth & @newtscamander When the subject is “The strangest thing you’ve ever heard of…” why shouldn’t the characters in the inculpatory evidence be as weird as possible. That is, in point of fact, why I selected that particular video.

I also ran into a convention of dwarfs. After seeing 4 or 5 of them, I realized what was going on. It was a bit eerie until I figured it out.

newtscamander's avatar

@ETpro didn’t think of that ;)

@newtscamander No idea. The cops took him away. We didn’t exactly get a chance to chit chat with Crazy Roof Guy.
