Do mens hips widen or expand as they age into their mid 20s?

Asked by pleiades (6617points) October 22nd, 2013

I know I’ve gain some pounds, but I can’t help the overall feeling that my hips have expanded or something. Am I just in denial? I’m a beefy short stocky dude, but I used to be able to wear size 30 waist no problem, then two years ago I started doing 31 waist and those were extra loose. Now, almost out of no where 31 feels tight! And I know it’s not my jeans because I hang dry them and cold wash only.

It’s your pelvis getting itself ready for childbirth. Women’s bodies do it sooner; men’s do it later, and aren’t very good at it. But you all try, out of solidarity. Isn’t that nice? Yes, it is.

I think men tend to bulk up in general in their early to mid 20s. They go from boy to man at that point, really. In a rather short time, I’ve watched friends go from skinny cutie pie to full on, broad shouldered hunkster. Lucky bastards.

I agree with @Seek_Kolinahr that men broaden, and I swear my husband grew an inch in height in his early 20’s if that is even possible. Look college students and then look at men in their late 20’s. they look different. They fill in. If you compare to teens in high school even more of a difference. Some of it is weight, but it is more than that.

Lose 5–10 pounds and see how it affects your waist and hips, then you will know if it is just the poundage you have added. A lot of people tell me they are big boned when I know if they lost weight they would all of a sudden not be so big boned. How much have you gained? I would say the average man gains an inch with every 7 pounds more or less, depending on their weight.

Men’s hips do widen/grow with age, but it typically doesn’t happen until the 40s or 50s. And it has nothing to do with childbirth (did someone really say that?).

@livelaughlove21 It’s obviously a joke. I thought the same thing when I first saw the question that it is like pregnancy weight gain and sympathy labor pains.

Men continue to grow skeletally, for a few years longer than women and it’s conceivable (though still unusual) to be still growing into your early to mid 20s. Are you still gaining height? If not, then it’s just bulk from muscle development, or fat, depending on your lifestyle. Your mid to late 20s are your peak years for muscle development, if you eat and exercise right.

The widening of the pelvic girdle in females is indeed a biological adaptation related to the reproductive capacity of females. Strange sounding or not, it is a well validated fact.

livelaughlove21's avatar

@Dr_Lawrence Are there people that disagree with that? Seems quite obvious. This question isn’t about women, though.

Omg. I can’t believe that what I wrote actually puzzled anyone. I’ll be more careful in the future.

I thought I’d be able to fit into my size 31 jeans no problem. I’ve been doing 3.3 miles 5 days a week for a little over a month still no cigar. Oh well, I’ll try some more and try and drop 5 pounds next month (is that possible? I’m American and it will be November!)

@susanc You received 7 GA’s, I wouldn’t worry. You can always use a tilde ~ after to clarify it is sarcasm or not to be taken seriously.

livelaughlove21's avatar

I guess the humor went over my head on that one.

I rely on the tilde here on Fluther. I’ve seen some ridiculous statements that I wish were sarcasm, but no such luck.

Plus, this is in General, where answers are supposed to be helpful. Sarcasm isn’t particularly helpful.

No grown man should fit a 31 waist. That just sounds fragile.

@Seek_Kolinahr Depends on their height. I sold a lot of 31’s when I worked outside of DC; mostly to Asians. My FIL is a 30 I think. He is only 5’7” though. My husband was 31ish when he was in his early 20’s. Now he runs between 32 and 33, depending on where he is with his weight. The most popular size for men is usually a 34 though, depending on where you live it varies a little. Probably some places it is bigger.

livelaughlove21's avatar

@Seek_Kolinahr My husband wears 30s and he definitely isn’t fragile. He has a great body – slim, but not scrawny, and he’s got nice muscle tone. He’s 5’9” and just under 150 lbs, just for reference. Men have narrow hips, what can you do? A guy of average height with a 30-inch waist is actually very normal-looking.

Dr_Lawrence's avatar

I know of no evidence that men’s widen as part of their development. The hips don’t grow disproportionately to other parts of the male skeleton.

susanc's avatar

Oh for god’s sake.

JLeslie's avatar

Seems science studied it and indeed men get wider.

jca's avatar

Older men have flatter butts.

@JLeslie

Excellent little read there! Ok here’s the kicker for me, I feel squeezed into a 31 but a 32 is too loose to the point it falls down on me!

It may be time to ditch Levis.

The sample sizes used seem too small to have the statistical power to validly draw inferences.
The sample did not sample men from different countries and cultures.
