Have you heard Miranda Lambert's song, "All Kinds of Kinds"?

Asked by ibstubro (18804points) October 26th, 2013

How long did it take you to understand all the lyrics, if you ever have? Has there been an odder C&W song in recent years?

It’s pretty simple, a song about how we are all different, and that all the people we love in our lives make up a “big tent” circus. And even the “respectable” have secrets , so don’t be secretive but be yourself.

It’s not at all odd.

I’ve hear it. I understood it from the first time I listened to it. Seems pretty simple to me. And I don’t find it odd at all. I’m not a huge fan of it, but it’s not odd.

A Country & Western song about a cross-dressing Congressman and his pharmacist girlfriend who gives her kids Ritalin to shut them up isn’t odd?

By what C&W standard?

Hi there Gelo ,
I hadn’t heard the song but here are the lyrics below . The song was okay . I had to look up the lyrics so that I could fully understand her words .

“All Kinds Of Kinds”

Ilsa was an acrobat who went and fell in love with that
Horatio the human cannonball.
A weddin’ ‘neath the big top tent with barkers clowns and elephants
Sideshow family oddities and all.
The dog-faced boy howled out with joy
As the tattooed lady was crying.
Ever since the beginning to keep the world spinning
It takes all kinds of kinds.

Thomas was a congressman with closets full of skeletons
And dresses that he wore on Friday nights.
Phyllis was a pharmacist, a dab of that, a pinch of this
Concocted to suppress her appetite.
When the children were fiddlin’ she’d slip ‘em some Ritalin
And wait for Thomasina to arrive.
Cause ever since the beginning to keep the world spinning
It takes all kinds of kinds.
All kinds of kinds.

When I play this old guitar from children’s shows to smoky bars
I take a break and think about the past.
When I stood up in geometry and everybody stared at me
And I tossed my test into the trash.
I scratched off my number while hitching out under
That bush league population sign.
Ever since the beginning to keep the world spinning
It takes all kinds of kinds.

Now some point a finger and let ignorance linger
If they’d look in the mirror they’d find.
That ever since the beginning to keep the world spinning
It takes all kinds of kinds.
All kinds of kinds.
All kinds of kinds.

=)

Hardly they typical, “There’s a Tear in My Beer”, in my opinion.

It plays on the radio here all the time. I even looked the lyrics up without getting the connection between Thomas the congressman and Thomasina the pharmacist’s boyfriend. It took us a couple of weeks to get the full story straight! lol

Thanks!

Her latest record is derivative, mundane, and somewhat pretentious, in my opinion.

So yes…....you have now been given your ‘Miranda Warning’

@ibstubro Here is is with lyrics on screen for any having a trouble picking up that Ozark accent. I like the thought, she has a good voice, and the music carries it well. It’s spot on in its statements, but is that news?

ibstubro's avatar

@ETpro News? Who said anything about news? It was a social discussion question for those who would like to discuss it.

I listen to mostly c&w music, and it’s probably the most atypical lyrics I’ve ever heard in a very typical country format. Locally, we’ve found it worthy of discussion and I thought I’d try it here, on a wider audience.

@ibstubro No offense meant toward the song. I like it too, and I’m not a C&W music fan. When I said it’s message is not news, I meant “news” metaphorically. The old saw, “It takes a heap of people to make a heap of people.” has been with us for centuries.

I just had a flashback of you patting me on the head like I was a child the LAST time I tried Fluther. Honestly, that’s the single most reason I can give for being at Askville until the bitter end. Within the past 9 days I’d posted, on Askville, an answer that got at least 5 positive ratings when I said:

“Fluther has little sweetness and light. I have a vague recollection of posting to an opinion question and being gently told that I was stupid for espousing an agnostic view because intelligent people are exclusively atheistic.”

Of course, I’m sure that ‘stupid’ is a ‘metaphor’.

I had to look the lyrics up. It’s a good song but it IS odd. I didn’t understand it when I heard it and I’m still not sure I do after reading the lyrics. BUT great song, I love her! :)

What’s confusing about the lyrics? To keep the world spinning, it takes all kinds of kinds – meaning all different kinds of people. Am I missing the confusing part?

OneBadApple's avatar

“It takes all kinds” would cover it. “All kinds of kinds” sounds clumsy and redundant…

livelaughlove21's avatar

It’s a song, not a book. Songs are usually not written as people actually speak. The wouldn’t be nearly as catchy.

OneBadApple's avatar

Point taken. I’ve never heard the song, so shouldn’t even be here.

The lyrics to the Beatles’ ‘I Wanna Be Your Man’ sound completely ridiculous when you just read them aloud. And I still like the song…

ibstubro's avatar

@OneBadApple if you’ve never heard the song, why are you here?

OneBadApple's avatar

I think I just said that…..

I guess I just don’t care for the title. And after all….I AM the public…..

ibstubro's avatar

@livelaughlove21 Song, book, story… What is it you’re commenting on? Or, do you know?

livelaughlove21's avatar

@ibstubro For someone that was complaining about people being mean on Fluther, you’re quite the rude little shit yourself. I have a strong feeling we won’t be getting along.

I believe it was quite clear what I was commenting on. My first answer was directed toward you and your original question about the song. My second comment was an inquiry as to why you and one other person found the lyrics to be confusing. My book comment was directed at @OneBadApple, who commented that the title was redundant.

Is it clear now or should I draw you a diagram?

@ibstubro A hearty welcome back to Fluther. With your touchy nature, you should be fun while you last.
