What should happen to people who steal from the taxpayer?

Asked by flo (13313points) October 27th, 2013

For example, stealing by means of lying about expenses:
-Senators (appointed) charging the taxpayer, (instead of the party) for work done strictly for the party.
-Claiming housing allowances when s/he hasn’t lived there for years, etc.

Like anyone else, they should be prosecuted if their is evidence to indict them. If they are found guilty by a jury, they should be fined and imprisoned.

We have a justice system, at last work.

They should also lose their pensions.

They should be forced to work at McDonald’s for minimum wage.

They ought to be tried for fraud and theft and if convicted penalized in a manner consistent with those crimes.

@WestRiverrat I really need to clean my glasses, I thought you said they should lose their penises.

Of course, they should be fined and/or jailed, but when you are a politician, it is unlikely that either of those things will happen. Regular people yeah, but it’s rare when a politician gets taken to justice like a regular citizen.

Their jobs should be abolished?

There’s what SHOULD happen, and then there is what DOES happen. They should go to jail. And ones that steal chump change usually do. But crash the whole US economy and require taxpayers to bail you out to the tune of a trillion dollars, and you get a 5 million bonus for a job well done, and a promotion.

I just read an article the other day damn, don’t remember how I came across it to link it here but…it was about how much inside embezzlement/theft happens in banks. Said that the FBI doesn’t even bother really investigating unless the amount is 100k or more. Lots of “petty” 10, 15, 20k losses that cannot be traced or proven to be any particular employee.

Screw the Government, no, I do not cheat on my taxes but this revelation really surprised me. Millions and millions every year with no proof or prosecution gets “skimmed” by bank employees.
