Making sure your house is clean as a whistle is the best way to keep them away.Vigorous vacuuming and keeping all food hermetically sealed usually eliminates them.It is usually preferable to call the local pest control professional. They will find the primary source of infestation and will eliminate them.

I’m guessing you can put all your dry goods such as they like to eat in a deep freeze for a few days. That should kill all the larvae and adults. and maybe you can salvage some of the food. Also consider doing as @Smitha said regarding cleaning and vacuuming thoroughly (vacuum with strong suction and a brush) before washing. For washing, I’d use a bleach solution wherever possible. It should kill whatever eggs are left. If you have to wait until you can afford storage containers, you can keep your bug-free dry goods in a new plastic trash bag with a twist tie.

Edit: I’m not sure if eggs will live in freezing temperatures, but I am sure you can give the little guys a chance to hatch out and then re-freeze.

It’s really helpful to know their life cycle and habits. http://www.pestnet.com/beetle/larder-beetle/

I hate pesticides though, and I’d try a lot of stuff before I used poison.

I notice it says in the link I provided that they love animal skins. This means they’re likely attacking your leather things too.

Ah! It says here: You can also freeze dry pet food for a few days to kill the pests.
