Who is your favorite dog in literature?

Asked by janbb (62859points) October 30th, 2013

Inspired by the movie question. The dog doesn’t have to be the main character but a prominent one.

Mine is Cafall from The Dark is Rising series. I cry buckets every time I read it when he gets shot by Caradog Pritchard. There are so, so many wonderful dog stories. Which one do you love?

Follow My Leader. The story of a boy who was blinded, and aided by a guide dog.

Probably Lassie. Loyal and patient, strong and a great companion.

Then again, I liked Lady and the Tramp. Lady – so sweet yet strong when she had to be. Tramp, streetwise and strong, and sassy, too.

Jip the dog (the Dr Dolittle one, not the David Copperfield one).

Puss-N-Boots! (I don’t really like dogs.)

@Skaggfacemutt I would have thought a Skagg face mutt would be your favorite!

Skaggfacemutt's avatar

Ha-ha! I didn’t even think of that. But it probably wouldn’t be good to change my user name to Skaggfacepuss!

Greyfriars Bobby is my favourite dog of history and seeing as there are plenty of books about his story, I guess he counts as an answer here. While I am sure that his story was embellished for the sake of tourism and history books, I still love how his legend has lived on. Also, he was thought to be a Skye Terrier or something similar which is my favourite breed.

@janbb What a cruel question. I could go on at length.

@filmfann I loved the dog from Follow My Leader also – good choice.

I simply can’t narrow it down to one. If I pick the top three, they would be:

Pongo from The Hundred and One Dalmatians – the novel, not the movie (smart, funny, and devoted to his family)
Lassie from Lassie Come-Home (steadfast and terribly brave, despite herself)
Lad from the Albert Payson Terhune stories (an honourable gentleman).

@Leanne1986 I thought of naming Frodo Greyfriars Bobby because he reminded me of him but he turned out to be Frodo Baggins instead, aka The Baggins.

Charley, John Steinbeck’s black poodle.

I actually hated the book (Travels with Charley) but I like the idea of a little black poodle that says “Ftt”.

@Leanne1986 & @janbb I visited the Greyfriars Kirkyard a few years ago when I was in Edinburgh, and was disappointed to see a “No dogs allowed” sign. That seems wrong. :(

Kavik, the wolf dog, of same title…

My favourite is my first, Black Bob from the Dandy comic which I read as a kid.

Marley from Marley and Me.

Einstein (aka Furface) from the Dean Koontz novel, Watchers.

Buck the wonder dog from Married with Children.

OpryLeigh's avatar

@janbb I love the name you chose!

@glacial I know what you mean. I visit the Kirkyard and Bobby’s statue every time I go to Edinburgh. It’s my own little tradition :)

janbb's avatar

@Leanne1986 It suits The Baggins down to the ground!

janbb's avatar

@LostInParadise I thought of Gromit as a name too. I’ve always wanted to name a dog after him but Frodo was just…Frodo.
