It seems everyone has a camera/video recorder now, but are you amazed at how videos are capturing everything?

I’ve seen on the news lately how a bus caught fire while going down the road and someone had recorded it right before the fire, a woman getting ready to jump off a bridge, caught on camera before anyone noticed her, a fireball travelling down phone and electric wires caught right before it happened.
How does this happen? Are people just standing or driving around with their video camera’s rolling in the hopes of capturing something of interst?

Smartphones are sophisticated, and now affordable enough to be nearly ubiquitous. This isn’t 1983.I can reach into my pocket and start recording HD video in under 3 seconds. No lugging a box bigger than my head, fiddling with controls for a few minutes, and waiting for stuff to warm up; just pull it out, two swipes, one press, and BINGO!

With that in mind, I am amazed that you are amazed.

The only thing that amazes me is how loudly people wail about losing their privacy and security yet don’t have the slightest compunction about videoing anything that moves (or doesn’t). One thing’s sure: video intrusion is here to stay—and increase.

That’s an interesting irony, @Pachyderm_In_The_Room. I guess the one I was thinking of isn’t the only one—namely, that photographic evidence of everything seems to be everywhere, but during the same period when this came about, we also saw the use of Photoshop and other software graphics tools become so commonplace that no one can trust photos to tell the truth any more.

I’m not amazed, as almost everyone carries a smart phone with them nowadays. We also have lots of CCTV cameras in our cities. Anything interesting that happens ends up on YouTube or in the national news. I have some reservations about it but overall it isn’t a bad thing.

There is no such thing as privacy anymore. Remember privacy? That was where you could do something and nobody would see you do it. Now, somebody’s bound to have recorded it. Shades of George Orwell: BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU
