Would this make it difficult for you to sleep soundly?

Asked by ItalianPrincess1217 (11979points) November 5th, 2013 from iPhone

I feel like a bit of a princess lately (no pun intended). I have been having a very difficult time falling asleep at night and I’m wondering if I’m just focusing too hard on this one little annoyance or if it would bother anyone else equally as much. I feel like I’m being ridiculous by complaining about something that seems insignificant but I’m sleep deprived and desperate.

I live above a collision shop. The owners leave their shop radio on 24/7 for whatever reason. Maybe they forget to turn it off when they leave. Our bedrooms must be right above where that radio is because it is much louder in that part of our house. Not noticeable during the daytime but when it comes time for bed, it’s all I can focus on. You know that deep, vibrating sound you can hear when a radio talk show plays in a far away part of your house? You can’t hear the actual words or the music but you hear the bass and vibrations. That’s what it’s like all night long. And for some reason my brain can’t stop focusing on it! I have taken a sleeping pill almost every single night. My s/o isn’t bothered by this. He falls asleep within minutes of gettin into bed. Me? I’m up for at least an hour, listening to the noise, getting all worked up about it, tossing and turning.

Any suggestions as to how I can avoid taking sleeping pills every night? I do turn my humidifier on to drown out the sound a little but it still overpowers it. Would this bother any of you jellies or are you able to ignore small annoyances like this?

To me that would be a major annoyance. I would definitely talk to the shop owners. They could set a timer to turn their radio off automatically. There is no reason for it to plague your nights, especially when there’s no one even there listening to it.

I have to turn on a fan to drown out any noises. It would keep me awake, too.
If talking to them doesn’t work, maybe some type of sound machine to drown it out.

This would also bother me terribly. I would use a fan to drown out the noise. (I see chyna beat me to that suggestion)

I’ve used a fan in my room for many years to help me sleep and now I can’t sleep without it.

It would drive me nuts also. And I have slept with fans most of my life

Just to clarlify…no conversation has taken place yet with the shop owners? If not, this is an easy one. Take @Jeruba‘s advice and just have a kind word about how it is affecting your sleep. Ask for their help in resolving the situation.

They probably have no clue, and if the message is delivered kindly, surely they will work with you in resolving the situation. If they do comply, please be sure to thank them for their assistance. Positive feedback can work wonders.

@Pied_Pfeffer No I haven’t had a conversation with them yet about it. I felt as though it might come off as too demanding. Seeing now that others would be bothered by this, I feel a little more confident in asking them to turn it off after hours. I like to pick my battles wisely, not that it necessarily needs to be a battle. Maybe they’ll simply agree and the house will finally be silent at night! I can dream, can’t I?

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

Yes, please do have the conversation. It may seem like confrontation, but it’s all about the delivery, isn’t it? Have you met the shop owner/manager already? If so, it should be easier.

Proper sleep is important to one’s health. Plus, you have a young one who needs you to be at your best. Resolving the situation is much better than taking sleep medication.

Will you let us know how this turns out?

That would drive me to distraction. It might drive me to vandalism.

Here’s hoping a nice conversation will be all you need to solve this problem.

I also sleep with white noise – an air purifier.

@Pied_Pfeffer Yes, actually the shop owner is my landlord. I apologize, I failed to mention that in my original post. Thinking more about it, we shouldn’t have any issue with having a simple conversation with them. We pay rent on time and obey all their rules so I would think this should be an easy fix. I suppose I needed some reassurance that I wasn’t being too uptight about it.

And I agree, sleep is vital and I have been really lacking it lately. It’s effected my mood and motivation. I will try to catch the landlords tomorrow and let you know what happens.

Yes, let us know how this turns out.

Talk to them, and tell them that it bothers you at night when it’s quiet. Ask them to turn it off.

I leave a radio on in the kitchen, 24/7 and in the bedroom I can only catch snatches. Doesn’t bother me a bit.

However, if I were you, I’d go out and but an inexpensive, simple, timer that plugs in between the appliance and outlet. If you can pre-program it, do so (you know the shop hours…on ½ hour before they open, off ½ hour after). Then go to owner kinda sheepishly, and say, “Could I make a tiny little request?” Should be cake.

Stop with the sleeping pills.

I love silence, sans crickets and owls and nature sounds.
yep, I’m with @chyna .
Now that I live on the edge of town again after years on properties I have to have a fan on to fall asleep with the city noise. Bah Humbug!
I’d talk with them for sure, be diplomatic, but firm!

You could also leave a note if you’re not comfortable meeting them. At times anonymity is a good idea.Try earplugs,it would definetly help blocking out a considerable percentage of loud ambient sounds.

ibstubro's avatar

That’s a new idea, @Smitha. Those foam earplugs you roll up are really cheap, comfortable and effective. More so than those sleeping pills.

Actually I know many people who sleep with ear muffs because their partner snores loudly every night. :)

Definitely talk to them. They may not realize the music is coming through the walls.

I can’t stand any noise at all at night including fans. It makes it easier that he is your landlord. Just tell him.

Skylight's avatar

I sleep with two fans on either side of the room to drown out any possibility of noise at night. Its funny, I am a very light sleeper, but the white noise of the fans just lull me to sleep.

Your situation would make me very very unhappy. That is one of my pet peeves, TVs & radios too loud and intrusive. Even when the neighbor drives into their drive with their bass booming in their car for a few minutes I find it irritating.

Perhaps you could talk to your landlord about sound proofing your apartment. That might be a good way to bring up the problem, without coming right out and confronting him.

anniemdaffodils's avatar

Definitely an annoyance; and justifiably so. If you think you can talk to shop owner, do so. I would hope he or she would be understanding about this. If they aren’t, ask your landlord. Good luck. This would drive me crazy too.
