What should the police have done differently?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46807points) November 18th, 2013

This video shows a woman with 5 kids in the car being pulled over, then driving off, then pulling over, then speeding away again. She led the police on a high speed chase. They were shooting at the van. There were 5 kids in the car!

I think they should have just pulled an OJ on her. Tailed her at low speed until she ran out of gas.

But would that have even been possible?

I believe that normal procedure is to follow and not intercept, but she was being erratic so there was danger either way. And she not only ran away and resisted, but her son was scuffling with cops.

It’s basically a ‘submit or risk death’ scenerio, she was ignorant not to comply unless she had drugs or some reason to take that risk, esp with kids.

Among other things, she was arrested for possession. Yes, she and her son both deserved whatever they got…but what about the other 4 kids?

@Dutchess_III I can’t say, but those kids are probably better of without a drugged out mom driving them around possessing drugs and putting them through who knows what.

Well, sure. They should be taken away from her, and I imagine they will, but the cops could have shot one of the kids! And she could have killed them by taking the cops on a high speed chase…which she couldn’t have done unless they participated.

They could have put spike strips across the road, causing all four tires to flatten.

They could have shot out the tires at close range instead of shooting into the vehicle.

Dutchess_III's avatar

@zenvelo in all fairness, I don’t know that they were shooting into the vehicle. But just shooting in that general direction was wrong, wrong, wrong, imo.

The high speed chase bothers me to. A few years back an innocent woman was killed when a vehicle being chased by the police t-boned her in an intersection. If the police don’t go charging after cars, the cars will be far less likely to drive insanely, trying to get a way.
There has to be a better way than a high speed chase, especially in this day and age of electronic capabilities. If a car is stopped, the first thing a cop could do is stick a GPS locator on the back end, and remove it when he’s finished writing the ticket or whatever.

They could have said to themselves, “oh look, we are working for an evil corrupt system as police officers, isn’t that horrible” then quit to go home and kill themselves.

The officer should have made a report and had her arrested in her home.

I think smashing the window and shooting at the van was too much. In regards to the “high speed chase”, I’d like to how fast they were going. Speeding was what caused her to get pulled over to begin with, so I’m curious how much faster she was going during the chase than when she was just speeding on her own.

Good point @Seaofclouds. On the video the cop said she was doing 71 in a 55. The thing is if you’re being chased I imagine you’d take chances you wouldn’t other wise, running stop signs and stuff. But I don’t know cuz I’ve never been chased. Not exactly. Well, I sort of evaded once but that doesn’t count.

That was crazy on both parts.
There was no need for the bashing and shooting. There was nothing that was done that was life threatening that dictated bashing a window, firing openly, or doing anything else but follow and deal with it when the person did stop.

@blueiiznh Those were my thoughts too. It got crazy violent. It was the woman’s fault to begin with, but the police could have controlled it better than they did, I thought.
