Does anyone like the new Youtube and Google integration?

Asked by AshlynM (10684points) November 20th, 2013

Can someone please clarify this for me?

Apparently you need to have a Google Plus account in order to make Youtube comments?

And if you want to delete your Youtube account through Google Plus, you can’t delete it separately.

However, you CAN delete your Google Plus account through your Youtube account but in order to make comments on Youtube, you STILL need to have a Google Plus account?

Have I got this right? I’m so confused here.

I hate it. I don’t use Google+, and will likely distance myself from YouTube because of this. I have a YouTube account – I don’t want it linked to my Google+ account. I don’t want to risk comments I make on YouTube carrying over into my Google+ circles, and vice versa. Integration across social networks is the last thing I want to be forced into.

The only positive effect it might have is to limit people’s access to prior comments… which means they might be less likely to disintegrate into mean-spirited chaos.

I remember well all the buzz about Gmail when Google was still relatively small; it seemed like the smartest thing ever, and was about to solve all our problems with the existing frontrunners. It would be nice to start hearing that buzz about a new product now.

I snapped on Saturday

I have used maps a few times but I will never log into Google again.

@johnpowell You’re my hero. I’m not that brave… yet.

It sucks! Sometimes all I want to do is vote up or down (now that’s gone) or post a quick comment. I don’t want to have to have a separate account and log in every time I want to do that. Can you imagine if Fluther was like that? Everyone would flee.

Anyone remember this? Maybe they weren’t kidding after all.

For the record. Here is what my replacements are.

https://duckduckgo.com/ for search. It works well enough for my needs.

fastmail.fm for email. 5 bucks a year and no ads and they don’t scan your email to insert ads in other webpages you visit.

Five days in and I don’t miss google. Just a note here. I started moving off gmail about a year ago to my own hosted email. All the important stuff has been moved over.

I hate it! But, my google+ account is pretty much a wasteland. I don’t use it for anything at all.

@johnpowell I noticed you mentioned fastmail in the link, and I jotted it down for future reference. The hassle of having to change my email address is what’s keeping me with google at present.

I use DuckDuckGo on a semi-regular basis. But there are some things that I can’t really do without, like Google Scholar (which of course, they’ve buried several layers deep from their home page). There are, of course, other resources, but I already use all of those available to me. Each one has its own quirky gaps and weaknesses. I don’t have the luxury of deciding to cut one out.

@glacial Certainly switching email was the hardest part. It was actually glacial. I spent a good six months just switching over what went into gmail to my own hosted email.

And for the record. Fastmail will suck in all your gmail in a few easy steps. So you don’t actually lose any email that has been previously sent to you. That comforted me tremendously.

@johnpowell Ok, that’s good to know. Thanks!
