Did I take my birth control too late?

Asked by cutiepi92 (2252points) November 25th, 2013

I’ve been on and off of BC for around 7 years now. I am on my second pack of microgestin after being off of it for a year and I always take it between 10:10 – 10:30 every night. Saturday morning, I had unprotected sex. Later that night, we went to go see Hunger Games Catching Fire. I have an alarm on my phone to remind me to take my pill, but I don’t know how to make the phone alarm just vibrate. Last time I put my phone on silent, it went off loud in the middle of the movie and I had to basically empty out my purse in order to find it to turn it off in the middle of the theater. To avoid that, I turned off my phone. Being immersed in the film, I didn’t remember that I didn’t have my trusty alarm on to remind me to take my pill. Immediately after it ended, I turned my phone back on and saw it was 11:30. I took my pill right that second. Am I still protected if it was nearly an hour and a half late? It was the first pill of my second week in the pill pack if that means anything.

I doubt you have anything to worry about. You didn’t “miss” a pill until you’ve gone 24 hours after you were due to take it. An hour and a half is no big deal.

Your best bet is to check with your doctor, but I can’t imagine that an hour or two leeway would matter.

I’m sure it’s fine. I pretty much never took mine at the same time every day.

It’s completely fine, don’t worry.

Sounds okay, but any time there is doubt at all, you should take extra precautions.

I always took mine first thing after I got up. My evenings weren’t predictable enough to maintain a schedule around.

Your package insert probably says that missing one is fine (just take it when you remember – which you did), and missing two means you should use backup for a week, and missing three means throw away the pack and start over.

That’s what my OrthoTri-Cyclen says.

As long as you are consistent the majority of the time, a rare occurrence of taking it late is unlikely to matter. However, if there are other factors that might reduce the pills efficacy – such as taking antibiotics or being significantly overweight – then being inconsistent could put you in the 0.1%, like it did for me.

You will find out in 9 months.

I would say you are safe. As long as you do not make it a habit you are protected and it is working. If you are really worried you can just use a condom for the next couple of days to be on the safe side.

I was mainly hoping that since it wasnt more than 2 hours late that I would be alright. I don’t take any other medication and I’m a healthy weight
