Do you agree with this list of movies that the article claims we "all" thought were really good when they came out, but with time realized they were really bad?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46811points) November 25th, 2013

Here is the list.

1. Crash (Never saw it.)

2. The Boondock Saints (Never saw it)

3. Avatar (Saw parts of it. Was not impressed.)

4. Dangerous Minds (Saw this movie again about a month ago. My husband loves it, I thought it was ridiculous. Good story, good plot, wrong actress to play the teacher. A real inner-city class would have had sweet little Michelle Pfifer for lunch. To offset that they mention that she was in the Marines and knew karate. They even had her doing a 5 second exhibit. Right. Whatever.)

5. Donnie Darko (Never saw it.)

6. The Notebook. (I like it. The only thing that rubbed me wrong was how the actress played the part of an Alzheimer’s patient. In my experience there is nothing gracious or genteel about Alz.)

7. The Sixth Sense. (I thought it was OK, and I would watch it again.)

8. Finding Neverland (Never watched it)

9. The Doors (Gaaagggg!!!)

10. Inception (I think I’ve started to watch it a few times, but never finished. I don’t even know what it’s about.)

11. Garden State (Never saw it.)

1. Crash – awful.
3. Avatar – One of the only movies I couldn’t finish watching.
5. Donnie Darko – C’mon. What’s wrong with this? Doesn’t belong on this list.
7. The Sixth Sense – Not good.
9. The Doors – Felt like a soft-focus-filtered made for tv movies.
10. Inception – I am still stumped why this got any attention at all.

Didn’t see the rest.

First let me say that anything that is predictable really irritates me, that being said I did like Avatar and The Doors out of this list.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I predicted you’d say that. :}~

Valerie111's avatar

I still think The Notebook and The Sixth Sense are good movies.

Haven’t watched most of this list. Saw and liked Inception and Sixth Sense. Would probably watch them again. However, they were both predictable. In the first 5 minutes, I knew how the Sixth Sense would end. Inception took a little longer. Figure that one out in 15 minutes. I like when suspense movies actually surprise me. One the few movies that kept me guessing was Shutter Island.

cookieman's avatar

I haven’t seen any of them.

Donnie Darko -I liked it the first time I saw it, but I have watched it several times since and enjoyed it more. I was too confused the first time.

The Notebook-This my most favorite movie of all time. And no it’s not cuz I’m Ryan Gosling swooning. (even though I am). My mother grew up in the 40s and would have been near Allie’s (the female lead) age. (the 40s are also my favorite time period in history)
On top of that, my mom developed Alzheimer’s. My goodness do I wish I had a father like Noah that would be there for her like that.

@ Dutchess_111

I’m not sure what you mean. Allie was in the beginning stages of
Alzheimer’s when the movie started. And it is that way. And she does get much much worse at the end.

The Sixth Sense-I enjoyed it most the first time, but I have seen it again and still liked it.

The Doors -I enjoyed it the first time. I’d see it again.

Garden State-This is also in my top 5 movies. I have seen it many many times and love it.

The rest of the movies, I have not seen

Donnie Darko, Garden State and The Notebook are all in my top 10 favorite movies.
I guess I like “bad movies”. Oh well.

I was never on the Avatar is going to be great bandwangon. I forced myself to watch it one day when I wasn’t feeling well and it put me to sleep.

I liked The Doors and still do.
I liked The Sixth Sense and still do.
I liked Inception and still do.
Crash, Dangerous Minds, Finding Neverland and Garden State were meh.
I have no desire to see The Notebook.

I also liked Donnie Darko and I really liked The Boondock Saints.

I don’t agree that “we all” thought they were good, especially the schmaltzy ones like The Notebook. I remember everyone turning on Avatar shortly after it was released, like hating it was the cool thing to do. I thought it was pretty good for a big-budget Hollywood movie. I resent when people go to movies like that, all excited, get exactly what they paid for, then shit all over it after they’ve left the theatre. It is exactly what it promised to be.

Donnie Darko is a cult classic – it’s likely that more people like it now than did when it was released.

I think the only movie that really belongs on this list is Inception. People wanted to like it so badly, but it wasn’t that good overall. Bit of it were brilliant, but only bits.

@anniereborn I’m saying that in my experience with my mother there was only pain and fear and confusion and loss of control, not only mentally but physically as well. The actress seems very peaceful and gracious, for the most part. My mother was never at peace after it started. Eventually she started hallucinating (I believe it was because of the drugs) She didn’t die quietly in her sleep, either. She wound up catatonic for the last 6 months, trapped in bed, neither moving nor speaking, unable to communicate. Some part of her was there, though, because one day she just quit eating. She clamped her teeth together so they couldn’t get a spoon in. It took her a week to die.
The whole thing, from beginning to end, took 5 years. It was horrible and I’m leaving out the worst parts. It was nothing like it was portrayed in the movie.

This is all so subjective it’s really not worth bothering with.

Inception was terrible.

I only watched Avatar and Inception, and while I agree that Avatar was horrible, I thought and still think that Inception is a fine movie, if perhaps overrated.

1. Crash: Haven’t seen it, assuming you’re talking about the popular one and not the James Spader movie.

2. The Boondock Saints: I don’t recall it at all.

3. Avatar: I was completely aware of how horrible it was from the outset.

4. Dangerous Minds: Haven’t seen it.

5. Donnie Darko: BLASPHEMY! That movie is f*king awesome.

6. The Notebook: As far as romance movies go, it was actually pretty good.

7. The Sixth Sense: A fantastic movie. Most Shayamalan movies aren’t meant to be watched again, but I’ve enjoyed re-watching this one. The only issue I take with it is the dinner scene.

8. Finding Neverland: I actually deeply love Finding Neverland. The VHS of Peter Pan starring Mary Martin was in my VCR almost daily for most of my childhood, so it means a lot to me.

9. The Doors: Fuck this list. Great film.

10. Inception: Meh. Didn’t like it the first time.

11. Garden State: Haven’t seen it. Not my bag.

1. Crash Great movie!
2. The Boondock Saints Never saw it.
3. Avatar Never thought it was great, though it is good.
4. Dangerous Minds Never saw it.
5. Donnie Darko Released the day after 9/11, it failed in the theaters. It obtained cult status during video release. I didn’t see it till a couple years ago, and I think it is terrific.
6. The Notebook. Never saw it. My wife loves it.
7. The Sixth Sense. Terrific film. It is only diminished by the movies the director has made since.
8. Finding Neverland Never thought it was great. It was okay at best.
9. The Doors I think it was a good, but not great movie. Terrific acting by Val Kilmer.
10. Inception Good, but over complicated movie. Never thought it was great.
11. Garden State Seriously? Who ever thought this was good? I love Natalie Portman, and yet always avoided this bomb.

Here are 5 incredibly overrated movies that I ALWAYS thought were terrible:

1) American Beauty
2) Chicago
3) The Deer Hunter
4) A Beautiful Mind
5) Terms of Endearment

All won for best picture. I never liked any of them, and I watched a couple repeatedly, trying to figure out why people like it.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I like your list ^^^ and agree with 4/5ths. I loved A Beautiful Mind the first time I saw it. After that, You Already Know so…..

I disliked Inception the first time I saw it. I completely disagree with The Sixth Sense though, I love that movie. I agree with Crash and Garden State though. Some other nominations:

Remember the Titans
Forrest Gump
A Beautiful Mind
The Shining

There are two Crash films.

Crash (1996)
After getting into a serious car accident, a TV director discovers an underground sub-culture of scarred, omnisexual car-crash victims who use car accidents and the raw sexual energy they produce to try to rejuvenate his sex life with his wife. Stars: James Spader, Holly Hunter, Elias Koteas ~IMDB

Crash (2004)
Several characters’ stories interweave during two days in Los Angeles: a black detective estranged from his mother; his criminal younger brother and gang associate; the white district attorney and his irritated and pampered wife; a racist white police officer who disgusts his more idealistic younger partner; an African American Hollywood director and his wife who must deal with the officer; a Persian-immigrant father who is wary of others; and a hard-working family man Hispanic locksmith. The film differs from many other films about racism in its rather impartial approach to the issue. Rather than separating the characters into victims and offenders, victims of racism are often shown to be racist themselves in different contexts and situations. Also, racist remarks and actions are often shown to stem from ignorance and misconception rather than a malicious personality.

Stars: Sandra Bullock, Don Cheadle, Matt Dillon, Jennifer Esposito, Brendan Fraser, Terrence Howard, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Thandie Newton, Ryan Phillippe, Larenz Tate and Michael Peña.
~Wikipedia

Crash (2004) is one of the best films I’ve ever seen in my life. I highly recommend it.

@Espiritus_Corvus

Personally, I felt the writing and direction in Crash was very amateurish. It could have benefited from some subtlety and nuance.

The only one of those I saw is Inception, and it sucked ass.

@rockfan Nuance doesn’t tend to sway Oscar committees. ;)
