How often do you check your receipts and when is the last time you caught a big error?

Asked by Coloma (47190points) December 28th, 2013

Admittedly I am not much of a receipt checker, however, yesterday I caught a huge error on a grocery purchase. A handful of fruits and veggies and lunch items came to over $42. When I got to my car and checked the receipt it turned out that the cashier had charged me for 27 Zucchini instead of 2. lol
A whopping $17.11 for 2 squash!

I think it’s time I start paying more attention to my receipts.

The only things I purchase in a brick-and-mortar store are groceries. The markets I shop at have the live display, and I usually watch that closely as each item is scanned. The only mistakes I have seen have been with produce. It’s easy for the cashier to put the wrong code in. Sometimes it’s the organic code, when the produce is conventional. Or occasionally, it’s just wrong – like entering the code for an exotic pear rather than organic fuji apples.

I check every receipt that I get.

My grocery has a “scan it wrong, get it free” policy; they had to pay me twice last year. (Both times there were ‘2 for 5.00’ promotions and they charged me full price each time)

I have also been mischarged at restaurants – often – and always bring it to their attention. Usually it’s that we ordered two drinks but were charged for 3 or 4.

I’ve never caught a mistake but I always check my receipt and my account. I make so little that even $10 is a lot of money to me.

Yes, this has made a believer out of me, I will be checking things twice in the future.

I must admit I don’t do it as often as I should, Mrs Squeeky on the other hand checks it all the time.

I try to have a basic idea of what my total will be before I get up there. Fortunately, my phone has a good calculator app.

I have caught 2 errors in the last 2 months. Both were where I was using my debit card and getting cash back. I pushed the 20.00 cash back button, but it rang up 40.00 and the cashier didn’t catch it either and gave me 20.00.
The second time I pushed the 20.00 cash back button (different store) and it rang up 50.00 cash back which was strange because that wasn’t even a choice. I caught both right at the register so it wasn’t a hassle except that they couldn’t reverse it, so I had to take the cash that rang up. I have stopped getting cash back.

I usually try to pay with cash and I always add the items up in my head so I have a pretty accurate idea of what the total should be. I also usually look at the screen as the items are rung up.

I hate receipts!

I’m embarrassed to say that I almost never check my receipts, or even know the total, when paying by credit card.

That said, if I’m asked for a store card, I will immediately start asking the cashier how much I was charged for the ‘advertised sale’ items. If I buy items that are on sale, then I will check the receipt to see that I got the sale price.

@ibstubro Haha, the downside of free spirited personalities that hate attention to detail.lol

I never check; but I usually use the self-checkout in the grocery store, or I watch as items are scan when a clerk is checking me out. Our bank sends us a notification of our charges to our mobile phones, so we have confirmation that the charge is correct before we even get to the car.

I always watch to see that they go through correctly.

I’m OCD, @Coloma. I either have to focus or un. lol When money was tight, I focused like a hawk. Now I have the luxury if being lackadaisical.

I always check restaurant recipts. I rarely check grocery receipts, but I do sometimes. Maybe 20% of the time. When I buy clothes or hardware or other retail items I usually do look at the receipt, but it might be as I am walking away from the counter and if I find a mistake I have to walk back, interrupt the line again, etc. if I know I have some sort of tricky discount I try to check the receipt right away.

@ibstubro I’m not OCD but yes, I was prosperous for a long time and didn’t worry about money, now I am poor again.Plus, I am a left handed, right brained blonde, a bit of a handicap for minute detail. lol
