(Possibly NSFW) Was the police department right to post this video?

Asked by LilCosmo (1824points) January 7th, 2014

Here is a link to a story that ran on CNN. The Omaha Police Officers Association pulled this video of three adults berating a young child from someone’s Facebook page. The adults are saying nasty things to the toddler and the child seems to be responding in kind. The police say they posted it to show the “thug cycle” and how it is passed down through families. Some are think it was inappropriate to post the video. What do you think?

The Omaha Police officers Association comments seem to smack of racism. keep in mind that I am a 51 year old white male from a southern state.

I think police stations in general should have better things to do than post shit on Facebook.

What a world we live in… Instead of re-posting it, the police department should be following up on this form of child abuse.

Police are selected for their ability to degrade the citizenry. Really, this is pretty mild compared to police brutality.

@bolwerk My husband is a cop. Unfortunately a few bad apples gives them all a bad name. The cops I know are good, hard working, caring people.

Here is the original post from the OPOA’s website, it includes a description of where the video came from and why they decided to post it and all of the public comments, which are actually more interesting to me that what the website wrote.

It’s sad that the people on that video use that type of language, around a baby. I disagree with labeling the video “The Thug Cycle”. They say they want to break some cycle, but how does posting on FB have to do with breaking a cycle?
It just makes a lot of people watching the video say it’s horrible or sad. Posting that video does absolutely nothing but shaming and is way more wrong.

Meh, constitutional and privacy issues aside, sunlight is the best antiseptic. Too bad police departments don’t hold themselves to that standard. :(

@Smitha The police didn’t post it on facebook. The child’s uncle posted it on his facebook. The police got a copy of it from facebook and posted it on their own web site.
