Where is a good place to start MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) for adult rookies in Canada?

Asked by talljasperman (21739points) January 12th, 2014

I want to jump and roundhouse kick something like a punching bag…. I’ve been listening to
Double Dragon and I think it might be fun, and good exercise. I would like somewhere were I can loose control and ,“go to town”, on a punching bag. With an inspiring song in the background and for emotional release. Like the good old times in school; fighting bullies and fast thinking, and willpower to be back up.

DO IT!! Just find someplace and get going.

In my area, storefront martial arts schools are everywhere, not that I am suggesting you commute south for lessons.

I’m enthusiastic because I’ve been taking Krav Maga for about six months. We have college football players, librarians, doctors, cops, and stay-at-home moms. Everybody ends up fighting everybody, and everybody knows how to hit and kick and everybody gets knocked down.

I’m the oldest (50) and slowest guy in the class. But I’m bigger and I can punch harder. I might get paired off with a woman half my weight who’s twice as fast. That is a draw.

Also, it’s a fitness class. They work us hard. Like “I might puke” hard. It’s the best workout I’ve had since high school.

I was in OK shape before. I bike and run a lot. But just one class a week was a huge improvement. I lost my gut – I’m not losing weight, but I’m gaining muscle.

Yes, you get to lose control, go to town and get some emotional release. You will gain confidence. You will be disappointed if you have to miss class. It’s addicting.

Do it.

I don’t know much about MMA. My daughter is learning karate. Check this site for training programs. This article may help you with basics.
