What's more annoying?

Asked by ibstubro (18804points) January 20th, 2014

The Fluther member that has a limited amount to contribute because of limited life experience and a narrow belief system, OR
the Fluther member that has a limited amount to contribute because they are so ‘intelligent’ and superior that they feel bound to just punch holes in everyone else’s posts?

You can probably guess my answer.

I’m inclined to be more irritated with someone more argumentative that likes to pick apart everything. It gets tiresome. Incidentally, the problem with this question is it seems negative. (See what I did there? That was kind of ironic.)

SQUEEKY2's avatar

I will get back to you, but right now I’m tending to lean to the latter.

Pachy's avatar

The latter is more annoying to me, yet it can be fun following the comments of pushback they get from other jellies.

dxs's avatar

@Pachy Dammit! I just missed your 11111 lurve!
Hopefully not the first one because I’m half of that. Young, but not narrow-mindedly religious.
In general, I prefer people that are nice, genuine, and respectful towards everyone. Sometimes that stuff goes down the drain to prove a point.

“the Fluther member that has a limited amount to contribute because they are so ‘intelligent’ and superior that they feel bound to just punch holes in everyone else’s posts?”

In my experience people who complain about this simply don’t like their arguments being disputed.

zenvelo's avatar

I agree with the sentiments above. Most Jellies are aware if they have a limited experience and will offer only what they can. But they often have the best questions.

I’d add those with a “narrow belief system” to the latter though. There are a few jellies that have been around the planet for awhile that are narrow minded, and unwilling to listen to another’s viewpoint.

OR

The Fluther member who takes this site and it’s contributors far too seriously.

Yeah, that one.

keobooks's avatar

How about the jellies who don’t seem to have much to contribute because they get all their posts moderated out for personal attacks? Almost all of those guys are gone now, but I do recall someone who I swear half of their posts were <Removed. Reason: Personal Attack>

DWW25921's avatar

@keobooks I don’t generally go after people but I had one of mine removed yesterday for SPAM. I really didn’t mean to SPAM. Maybe I should have thought that one through or worded it differently. I mean, if someone really irritates me I’ll let someone know. I’ve only reported 1 person so far for what was obvious trolling. That was several months ago…

ucme's avatar

I have way better stuff to be doing than to be negatively moved by some dick i’m never going to meet, they mean less than zero to me & are therefore utterly irrelevant in every conceivable way.
I kind of find myself leaning toward @cookieman‘s stance then, I guess.

YARNLADY's avatar

Neither. I’m annoyed by people who judge others. Rather than learn by exposure to diverse ideas, they insist of finding fault.

Pachy's avatar

@Pachy Dammit! I just missed your 11111 lurve!

Don’t feel bad, @dxs, it got past me, too.

rojo's avatar

@Pachy Not to worry, you still have 12121 and 22222 to look forward to.

In response to the question, I would say the former is more annoying than the latter.

Blondesjon's avatar

I’m jumping on the @cookieman bandwagon for this one. The two examples the OP presented are why I fucking love this site.

For those who are most annoyed with people who pick apart questions:

The question identifies two groups of Fluther members who contribute little. Unless representatives of the groups identify their reason for limited contributions, something they would have to do via contribution, how would one know how to judge any individual who contributes little?

;-)

edited out. :(

PhiNotPi's avatar

@dxs I agreed with what you had originally written.

ibstubro's avatar

Negative schmegative, @DWW25921. ;-)

The worst is when they’re so obtuse, they talk the pushback to death as well, @Pachy.

You seem to have plenty value to contribute, @dxs. I don’t always agree with you, but you seem bright and communicative.

@Darth_Algar Could it be that people who don’t like their “arguments being disputed” value discussion over arguing and conversation over disputation? Less confrontation and more engagement?

I agree about the “best questions” observation, @zenvelo.

I think there are (rare) times when taking things seriously is warranted, @cookieman. But by and large, I think I’m in your camp.

I dunno those guys, @keobooks. I still secretly admire you, though!

@ucme chopped liver.

@YARNLADY we’re humans. Judgmental beings. The point is not to lead with your prejudice showing in order to be heard.

I’m surprised, @rojo. You seem so respectful of others. I have a hard time imagining you talking down at someone.

@Blondesjon You achieve what the ‘smart-assed’ pretenders on Fluther just pretend to. Genuinely irreverent and (occasionally) flagrantly irrelevant. Kudos.

@Bill1939 I personally do not consider a post contribution in and of itself. Yes, we now have to assess points for opening your mouth, as opposed to having something to say…something to contribute. Running your head is 1 on a scale of 1–1000, in my book. Verbiage does not necessarily equate with contribution.

Welcome, @PhiNotPi. I don’t recall you participating on a question of mine before.

If everyone here has better tolerance to the former type of jelly mentioned by @ibstubro , then surely everyone love me. I categorize myself as that type of jelly.
I love Fluther!

ucme's avatar

@ibstubro Rotten eggs

Paradox25's avatar

Maybe the latter choice. However my way of defining this would be the users who have been on here for a long while, who never contribute nothing serious in the form of questions or posts, and make a living off of either ridiculing or derailing other peoples’ questions or posts. I have no problems with class clowns if they don’t do the latter though since we’re all on here for different reasons, and hell even I mess around once in a while.

Even the so-called ‘intelligent people’ can’t be experts on everything, and can be crushed on certain topics in my opinion. Google searches, studying or analyzation does not always supersede hands on or life experience in my opinion either.

ibstubro's avatar

Well put, @Paradox25. Not all those users have been on here a long while. They come in every stripe.

Darth_Algar's avatar

@ibstubro “Could it be that people who don’t like their “arguments being disputed” value discussion over arguing and conversation over disputation? Less confrontation and more engagement?”

Is not disputing and offering other viewpoints part of discussion? Or by “discussion” do you simply mean passive agreement and placating other’s views?

ibstubro's avatar

@Darth_Algar does discussion require dispute and arguing?

I find the notion that punching holes in everyone else’s ideas, opinions and beliefs is a valid alternative to expressing our own thoughts. Existing to negate the existence of of others is a sad way to live, in my opinion.

Darth_Algar's avatar

“Existing to negate the existence of of others”

If that’s the way you view it then you might be taking the internets too seriously.

ibstubro's avatar

Annoying member #3:
The Jelly that argues themselves into a hole and then ends discussion with a blanket, “you’re too literal”, “too serious”, or “too dense” statement.

Darth_Algar's avatar

No, annoying member #3 has already been covered (see @cookieman‘s post above).

ucme's avatar

What a fucking pathetic fuss over nothing, tedious, boring crap.

ibstubro's avatar

And yet, @ucme, here you are!

ucme's avatar

Indeed, far from being annoying, I find it hilarious, free entertainment is not to be sniffed at.

livelaughlove21's avatar

The second one. Condescension and narcissism is always more annoying than just plain old ignorance.

I find the haughty, condescending ones to be the most annoying, and I’ve learned to avoid certain types of discussions/questions on here, because it seems like they lay in wait to come out of the woodwork and attack others for their beliefs and thoughts.
