How do I cope with pizza delivery anxiety? Or waiting in general?

Asked by talljasperman (21916points) January 21st, 2014

Whenever I order food I get anxious and I wait at the door and my life stops for a hour, while I worry if the pizza guy can find my apartment block. I give them my phone number and some times they don’t use it and they try to sneak into the apartment building.
What should I do? Do I…. Edit the pizza guy is here. Edit wasn’t worth waiting for. I ate two slices and put the rest in the fridge for evening pills.

Start making your own pizza.

talljasperman's avatar

@WestRiverrat Good idea when I go to the store I will pick up a brick of mozza cheese, and a summer sausage. and a Quesada bread slices.

livelaughlove21's avatar

Dude, chill out. It’s pizza, not gold.

talljasperman's avatar

@livelaughlove21 Yes how do I chill? Pizza is my major purchase this month other than rent. I’m going to sign up for Meals on Wheels. $6.50 a meal on Meals on Wheels.

livelaughlove21's avatar

Stop ordering pizza if you can’t handle it. Or go pick it up yourself. Or get some Digiorno.

talljasperman's avatar

@livelaughlove21 O.k. this is my last non—emergency pizza this month.

livelaughlove21's avatar

@talljasperman Wtf is an emergency pizza?

talljasperman's avatar

@livelaughlove21 When I forget to get, or save, food for the pills at night. I buy a personal pan pizza for $4 from pizza hut.

What pills are better than pizza?

talljasperman's avatar

@josie I take my medication with food, and the pizza guy is handy.$4 at night for a 8 or 6 inch pizza.

Got it.
I am joining with the opinion you should make your own. Lots of stores make pre made pizza dough, you can put any toppings on it you like, cook it the way you like and it will always be hot.
Plus it is sort of fun to make a pizza…Stretching out the dough, thinking up toppings, the nice smell of a baking pizza and the like.
It will enhance the experience of taking your meds. I think you should do it.

To cope with waiting anxiety, you need to make up various life stories in your head. It’s called daydreaming. You can pretend you are reading a novel, or better yet, actually read one.

No pizza delivery out here. :-( I have been known to make toast and put tomato sauce on it. I also put cream cheese or butter on a slice or two of bread – “in case of emergency”. That is much cheaper than pizza – and has fewer calories.

Boboli bread, pizza sauce in a jar, cheese comes already grated, and pepperoni comes pre-sliced. Only takes about 10–15 minutes in a pre-heated oven. No anxiety of whether the pizza can find you.

I used to get edgy waiting for pizza delivery. I realized it was because I waited until I was hungry to order. I only have a 20 min wait here, and the delivery people know me. I helped my impatience by nibbling a cracker or two, slow, tiny nibbles. Keep something for JUST pizza times which you find challenging, like paying bills, crosswords, etc.,to keep yourself involved.
For making pizza at home, I love totinos. They are supper cheap, the crust is really good, especially if you use parchment paper under it. You can add anything you want on top, and they heat fast.
Another good food to consider for your pill taking is tator tots. You can choose your amount, they go good with a sandwich, and you can do other things with them. Sometimes, after they get warm enough to break up, I break them up in a bowl, add small chunks of leftover hamburger, or ham, or chicken, etc, add spices and veggies to suit, put in skillet med high to high, keep moving it all around until desired browness. It is easy, great way to use leftovers especially amounts too small for a meal.

@talljasperman “When I forget to get, or save, food for the pills at night. I buy a personal pan pizza for $4 from pizza hut.”

And your only option is to order pizza? You can’t, say, make toast or something?

talljasperman's avatar

@Darth_Algar I need to go shopping , I am in a new apartment… if my pay day is tomorrow, fingers crossed, I can get some jam for toast.

cookieman's avatar

I agree that it would be best to make your own pizza. It’s generally cheaper, it is a fun thing to do, and no anxiety.

CWOTUS's avatar

You can at least learn the word that the Inuits coined to describe this feeling: iktsuarpok.

talljasperman's avatar

@CWOTUS I saved it in my browser. Thank you.

Grill up a Placenta while you are waiting.

Here’s another idea – French bread pizza. You could take some French bread (or Italian bread) cut it open, put some sauce on it, some cheese, whatever toppings you like and voila – you have some pizza. Cheap and anxiety-free!

Pizza bagels are also easy to make at home. Onion bagels, sauce, cheese, broil. Easy.

I like all the suggestions above that lean toward “learn to cook” and “cook it yourself”. You can make some good meals for 4$, much better than a small pizza.

talljasperman's avatar

New solution @all
I bought a Hugh slab of birthday cake and I eat that with my pills instead of ordering a large pizza.

cookieman's avatar

^ Well that’s better for you.

Darth_Algar's avatar

Good to see you making the healthy choices there.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

I got my buzzer fixed so my anxiety is mostly gone.

Darth_Algar's avatar

That’s good.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

Sorry I slipped up and ordered kfc wings. The anxiety is still real. Edit I’m slowly getting better. I only ate 5 wings and put the rest in the fridge.

Darth_Algar's avatar

Ok, question – places like Pizza Hut, etc, are a given, but you ordered from KFC? I’ve also seen you mention ordering from McDonald’s. I’ve never seen or heard of ether of those places offering delivery, so how are you getting them delivered to you?

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

Courier $8 per delivery.

CWOTUS's avatar

You know, I had never considered this before (so thanks to @Darth_Algar for raising the topic), with all of your “big” questions on improving your life, starting a career, gaining an education and so forth, the biggest single thing that you could start to do right now – tonight, in fact – would be go outside, to walk up to a fast food restaurant counter and to order your own food and then pay the cashier in person.

Maybe one of these days you could even eat in the restaurant and look at people, too. And put up with being looked at – even if you find that no one even bothers to look at you.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@CWOTUS That causes a similar anxiety. I feel safer at home.

CWOTUS's avatar

I don’t mean to denigrate the feelings of anxiety that you have, @RedDeerGuy1, but… so what? Did you know that one definition of courage is “being afraid, and then doing the thing anyway”? You don’t have to do it alone, and you don’t have to do it for long, but if you’re going to make any improvement in your life you have to at least make small ones. So make a small improvement – however small it has to be for you to confront the thought and actuality of making it – leave the house. Walk outside. Order a meal and pay for it – despite your anxiety.

Facing up to one’s fears generally diminishes them.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

I do that when I walk to my counselors office . I go by a kfc.

CWOTUS's avatar

Good for you. Now you just need to do more of that. Walk past your counselor’s office. Walk to a park bench and sit and look at folks. Eat your lunch outside. That sort of thing.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

Now I sit next to the phone and Fluther holding my debit card. Anxiety is mostly gone except after I take my pill at 7pm till 8:30pm on random nights when I get a panic attack.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

Waiting for my Amazon parcel. Is a good pair of size 13 mens walking shoes. To distract me I am cooking a chicken quarter in my electric frying pan.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

Update I order groceries and food from companies that have tacking software so I don’t worry anymore. The only meat that I usually buy is a rotisserie chicken or ginger beef. I am still not getting ahead debt wise, but I have stopped going deeper into debt. I’m breaking even each month.
