In the game minecraft, what kind of software do people use to do builds like this one?

Is there a special software? or just teams of people?

That reminds me of the Cube³ engine. Sauerbraten has a similar look, is based on that engine, and comes with an editor.

My experience of Minecraft is limited but the impression I get is that all building takes place in-game rather than externally. Brick by brick by brick.
