Not really an advance, but have you heard of the Seti@Home program? It allows ordinary people to use their computers to analyze radio telescope data for intelligent signals from space.

Big Astronomy – The mirrors are already in the works for the Giant Magellan Telescope. The plans for the Thirty Meter Telescope and the European Extremely Large Telescope are in very advanced stages.

Little Astronomy – Just a guess but I imagine it would be better and better CCDs for a given $ amount as time goes on.
