What the least expensive way to move across the country?

My girlfriend and I will be moving from San Diego to South Jersey. We have a two cars, my Ford Ranger pick-up and her Honda CRV. We might be able to fit all of our stuff in the cars but might need to rent a small trailer. We want to do the trip together so we’ll have to figure out a way to get my truck out their first.

I suppose I could drive my truck out first with half of our stuff, then buy a one way plane ticket back. I’d have to pay for gas, a minimal amount for lodging (I could sleep in the truck or couch surf), and the ticket back.

Or, I could have it shipped out.

Does anyone have an experience with shipping a vehicle across country? Is it worth it for the cost?
