Have you ever been blown away by seeing a mug shot of a friend, family member or trusted aquaintence in the paper or on the news?

Asked by Cruiser (40449points) March 28th, 2014

I interact with all kinds of outside salespeople in my business. And one such person who worked for one of our larger trucking companies who would bring us pizza for lunch on occasion. We have this regular truck driver who today showed me on his cell phone a mug shot of this salesman who was arrested for attempting to rob a pharmacy of 17 boxes of Oxi Contin! O_O

Sad but hilarious to me to imagine this normally really reserved dude all wild eyed shouting “I have a gun and give me all your Oxi Contin!” (he only had a knife)

Anyone else have stories of mug shot surprises to share?

I knew this kid I hung around with for about a year when I was a kid. Then later in my early teens I met this other guy, and then in my early 20’s I read in the paper that those two guys from my past got arrested, along with two other dudes I didn’t know, for stealing a truck filled with rat poison. Three of them got jail time, not sure how long, the other guy, being his first crime, got house arrest or something.
I wasn’t surprised about the two guys I knew. Although I didn’t hang around with them much after we parted ways, I saw them quickly slide into crime. One was in a gang, even became the leader of one of the ’‘chapters’’. This gang called Deuce. The other guy was always doing stupid things, like beating up random people on the street.
What they wanted with a truckload of rat poisons is beyond me though.
Not exactly what you’re asking, but related, somewhat.

When I was dating my ex-husband, we went into the local convenience store to get the morning coffee, and he looked at the picture on the front page of the paper – a cop leading someone in handcuffs – and said, “That’s my brother!” They hadn’t spoken in years and I hadn’t met that part of the family yet.

A kid form my neighborhood that had been in several of my classes all through school was arrested for assault – his photo wasn’t posted, but I was really surprised when I read the article. He wasn’t a bad kid growing up, and was fairly smart and athletic. It made me sad that his life had taken such a turn. I don’t think he’ll be eligible for parole until after we’re in our 80s.

@hearkat That had to be a “what the hell did I get myself into moment” lol

I’m blown away by the fact that certain of my acquaintances have not so appeared yet.

LOL @CWOTUS I think we can all say that about one or more people we know!

I was looking through our states list of sexual offenders and saw my ex-husband’s nephews picture. That was a shock.

CWOTUS's avatar

On the other hand, @chyna, considering that some people have been placed on “sexual offenders’” lists for pissing in public or being too naked on a nearly-nude beach, sex offenders just ain’t what they used to be, either.

This one was a bit of a shock.

He is one of my former Sunday School students, and was one of my brother’s best friends.

The mugshot

And this chick lived a block away from me when I was in middle school. I always knew she was weird, though.

@Seek_Kolinahr I can only picture in my mind his mug shot would be identical to a cam shot of his face while he was surfing child porn!

And she to me looks like she was 3 sheets to the wind while she was banging 12–15 yr olds

A few weeks ago on a whim I did a Google search for one of my ex-girlfriends and found several mugshots of her over the years since we dated. Noting real bad though. Just a bunch of public intoxication, drunken disorderly, crap like that. Still interesting to see what she looks like now (most recent was from September 2013).

The only experience I have close to this is when a man ran a red going 80 in a 50 and crashed into a car killing 6 people. He was arrested and his mug shot was on TV. It was the husband of a woman I worked with. When the news first reported the accident, which happened on a road I travelled all the time just 3 miles from my house, I turned to my husband and said, “I bet that is some regular guy just driving too fast.” A day later when the news was posting the mug shot I couldn’t believe how right I was. He went to jail, I don’t remember for how long.

@Cruiser The kid was 13, and she was his babysitter. I think the quote in the paper was “He wanted to learn how to have sex, so I showed him”.

Is it bad my first thought was “Why does a 13 year old need a babysitter?”

@Seek_Kolinahr “Is it bad my first thought was “Why does a 13 year old need a babysitter?”

That probably would have been my first thought as well.
