How long ahead of time should organizers give their itinerary to the police about a protest?

Asked by flo (13313points) April 7th, 2014

What is a reasonable period of time that police need to make sure that the firefighters and ambulances for example, don’t get caught in it?

2) Although everyone should know, are there other entities for whom it is most crucial to know the itinerary other than the people who would want to join the protest?

You may need to apply for a permit before you can demonstrate.

Never. You have the right to assemble.

@Afos22 so if people die or close to it because the ambulances and firefighters were held up or stuck that is okay?

Get out of the way.

@Afos22 help me think logically.

@flo: I know when the organization that I work for does a demonstration, we need to apply for a permit.

@jca, My question is would it be a day ahead of time, ...(different cities have different lengths of time) what is the period of time that is reasonable?

jca's avatar

@flo: Call the town or city and ask, but I would think a few days because, after all, it’s the government you are applying to, and we all know the government does not always have a one day turnaround time.

You will need to check with the department responsible for permits. In whatever municipality you plan to march.

It really depends on where you will be doing the demonstration, when you will be doing it, and what exactly you’ll be doing. The best thing to do is check with the area you are planning to do it in to make sure you follow their rules.

I would think a week would be sufficient if you wanted to give them notice and time to prepare.

Thanks all. I suppose I should have had it in Social since it is asking what do you think is reasonable not what any given city requires.

How about the the 2nd part of the question? Other than the police, the ambulance, and the firefighters, who else needs to know the most?

jca's avatar

@flo: When you apply for the permit, the agency you apply with will inform the others who need to know. You are not responsible to inform the others.
