What do you do when you hear people screaming in an apartment building?

Asked by talljasperman (21916points) April 20th, 2014

Do you get involved , call the cops, turn up, or down, the television. I usually go into hiding and call my mom.

Why would you do that? Jesus Christ there are people in trouble. I would have to go see what I could do after I made a fast 911 call.

@Adirondackwannabe They are screaming every day.Adults and children. I am frightened to get involved (I just want to live in peace). I think that they are getting evicted and that is why they are screaming. I’m retired from interfering in peoples lives. Unless someone asks me specifically for help then It is none of my business…. I’m not getting involved.

Most of the time when someone screams, I’m in bed, minding my dream :p

@talljasperman You live in a place where people are screaming everyday? What kind of place do you live in? I thought you were talking fire, problems, etc.

@Adirondackwannabe I’m in a long term homeless shelter. I pay $500 a month rent from my disability checks. It is co-ed and family’s are welcome. I was told by my psychiatric nurse to leave everyone alone. I’m tall and scary looking so It’s for the best…. You don’t want some guy (Me) talking about psychic time travel and spooking everyone.

@talljasperman You freak everyone out by talking about psychic time travel? Sounds like me when I begin my monologue about film noir and (recently) mafia :D

Why don’t you return to your mother’s for a break?

@Mimishu1995 I need to save money to go visit my mom, I think that she is going to visit me one day when she can rent a car.

I have called the cops a few times on the people I share a wall with. I know they are pretty avid drinkers since I always see them bring beer in or bringing empty cans out. Lots of angry screaming and there is a infant in the apartment. Keep in mind they are in a studio apartment so it isn’t like the baby is hidden from it. It is pretty much a room with a bathroom.

I’m not the only one to call the cops. Last weekend I heard some screaming when I was leaving and when I got downstairs there was a cop waiting and he asked me a few questions and he said he was waiting for back-up. I’m shocked the management company hasn’t stepped in.

It depends what the screaming is about, if it sounds very abusive I might call the police, but if it is just screaming and there doesn’t seam to be any physical abuse, probably not. Some cultures scream a lot and it isn’t traumatizing. If they were saying really awful name calling things at each other that would really bother me.

For me it sounded like it was getting physical. Stuff like, “Let me go.”

I’m not calling the cops if the freezer pizza is burned.

Our walls are pretty thin. I turn on the shower when I poop since I can hear it when they poop.

@johnpowell I’m going to assume you meant can’t hear it when they poop. Otherwise….uh…. :P

I used to have some neighbors who hollared a lot. What a huge nuisance! I think they did it just to clear the smog from their lungs or something, because it was quite regular. If somebody caused me to hollar so much, I would have them in my rear-view mirror, and I would not take one last look before leaving them behind forever.
I do understand your frustration with these loud neighbors. Maybe they do it to distract you from hearing somebody poop, or other noises.
When I had the noise in my life, I found that real dangers, and other things to report to police were done quietly. I never heard those events. The noise was aways just that, noise. My little girl was often a nervous wreck because of all the angry noise. If it was very early or late, so as to interfere with the sleep of some people, and was outdoors, I sometimes stepped out. to say, “Hey, respect the neighbors with sleeping children; lower your voices, or take it somewhere else.” Sometimes I got so frustrated I’d say something like, “Kiss and make up, or kil him so I can call the cops and have all the bodies hauled away.” Mostly I just turned up the tv.
