My sister’s neighbor in Provence:
The 50-year-old woman, who lives in a tiny, old, one-room stone cottage, has a several-acre field which she has planted with lavender. She is watering it by hand; several other people come by daily to help her. She sits on a folding chair that she moves around. Hundreds of feet of hose, hours of work. One big rectangle for her own kitchen garden. She has three geriatric dogs who come over and sleep in the grass and say “hello” when we take our walk. She brings them food wherever they happen to be lounging.

When it is harvest time, there are mechanical harvesters who gather the lavender for everyone in the area, so her work is done for the season.

I would do it. The place is a little small, but I could probably hack it. Well that is a lot of work, watering all that, lavender fields can get pretty damn huge, but I mean yeah, she must save a lot of money doing this. What does she do when lavender’s out of season?
Hangs out with her friends and her three dogs, tends her cottage garden, bikes to town every day for fresh bread and produce, I guess. Repairs her hoses? She was not a chatty Kathy with my sister (probably too exhausted).
She did have electricity in the cottage and no heating bills, apparently. Every building has a wood-burning stove.

Yeah even if it got real cold I wouldn’t be worried about that. The place is so small that it mustn’t take too much effort to heat up.
Lavender is that lucrative to grow?
It seems so, if you live frugally.
I guess the local marijuana grower was raising the wrong crop.

It sounds as though the 50 year old woman has the edge on all of us. I certainly applaud (and envy) her.
I love those little places in France. I would rent it!! Wood stoves are a drag I can tell that’s what most places here have. Is the owner in Australia the phone number has 61 country code.
I just learned that she does have a satellite dish so must own a TV.
The owner is Australian. My sister and bro-in-law rented a wooden farmhouse down the road and that owner was also from Australian.
