You overdid it and later in pain. What do you do to remedy these aches and pains?

Asked by Crazydawg (1283points) May 18th, 2014

Do you take pain relief like OTC NSAID’s or prescription pain killers? Ice or hot packs? Do you rub some dirt on it like tough guy Peyton Manning or go work out like nothing happened? Stretch some, get a massage or take a hot bath? What is your method of dealing with every day aches and pains?

A hot bath first and if that doesnt work, a massage from my partner

Depends on the type of pain. If my muscles are sore from use, like after a workout, I don’t do anything. I rarely get sore after a workout since I started my lifting program, so I enjoy it when it happens. It makes me feel like I got a really good workout in.

If you mean pain like joint pain or pain from some type of injury like a muscle strain, I’d probably just take some ibuprofen. If the pain is particularly bad, I might try a hot bath or ask my husband for a massage.

Hot bath and ibuprophen at night.

It depends on the pain. Ibuprofen is a must, because thus far it has been very effective pain relief for me, regardless of the cause and it doesn’t irritate my stomach. Ben Gay patches work wonders when I tweak my back. Baths are lovely, but my tub is small and getting up and out afterwards is now a challenge.

I have cherry stone thermal pillows that I couldn’t live without now that I suffer chronic pain from Rheumatic Auto-Immune Disease. They can be kept in the freezer for cold use, or popped in the microwave for three minutes for hot use. I’ve only ever used them for heat.

Massages are something I would indulge in far more if I could afford them. My sweetie does a decent job, but he’s not a professional and I feel like an imposition if I ask for them. I really think I could use one daily – including some Thai massage stretching and myofascial release to help with my condition, but I’m not loaded like that.

I like a whirl pool hot tub (Jacuzzi) and I eat bananas buttressed with potassium. I have far fewer muscle cramps (especially in those darn tight calf muscles) when I take potassium liberally.

@Dan_Lyons – A Jacuzzi or other brand of spa whirlpool would be a dream come true for me.

@hearkat I rent a small studio apt. in condo land so although it’s not mine, it is mine, if you know what I mean. And I must agree with you, it is like a dream come true for me, too.

I lie down on my warm waterbed…..it does wonders.

In addition to a hot shower and ibuprofin or Aleve, I keep a heating pad on an exercise table which I can lie on for ten minutes or so while I meditate. it helps a little. And it is useful when I don’t feel like taking four hot showers a day.

I also use a magnesium supplement and daily D3 for muscle issues. They’re as important as potassium

I try not to take too many NSAIDs because of the digestive risks. I’ll take acetaminophen but it’s not usually as helpful as an anti-inflammatory for the kinds of pains I get. I have a heating pad that is my best friend at times. If I’m at home, baths are nice, but a tub is unavailable to me for the majority of the year. I also have leftover oxycodone from my previous surgeries and I’ll self-medicate with that rarely, but only if I really, really need to.

Depends. If it’s pain from physical activity I just ride it out, and do more of the same the next day. And the next day. And the next day until it doesn’t hurt any more.

I just spent the whole weekend camping/partying. Stayed up till day break most nights, to say my back/neck are in ridiculous amounts of pain now would be an understatement.

When I come home from trips like this I generally just take a nice long warm bath, trade massages with my SO and then spend the day in bed watching movies or something. By the next day I’m usually feeling pretty nice again.

@El_Cadejo Those are the best weekends and you have it well managed. Nice job!
