Is it safe to click on this? (Please see details inside.)

Asked by 2davidc8 (10189points) May 29th, 2014

Recently, when I go into YouTube and click to view a video, there is a pop-up box near the bottom of the video that says “You are missing the video converter tool. Click here to get it.” Or something like that. It appears to come from Google Ads. Is it safe to click on this and get the “converter tool”? And what is this converter tool about anyway?

I don’t know much about YouTube, but if you can view the videos anyway then don’t click on it.

Good for you for being safety conscious.

If you don’t know what it is, don’t click on it. A whole lot like don’t get into a car with a stranger.

Probably like 99.999% of all ads on the internet; not safe. Just because its a Google ad, doesn’t mean it’s legit. Anyone can pay to put their ads on there. Not worth the risk.

@Stinley Without clicking on the ad (just ignoring it, or clicking on the upper right-hand x to close it), the video does not play, but I can hear the music. Other videos that don’t show the ad play just fine. So it would seem that these particular videos require some sort of additional “converter” or interpreter. One video that does this is just one of “Show Boat”, the musical, seemingly nothing particularly nefarious.

Youtube doesn’t work like that. When you upload it they convert it to a bunch of file formats on youtubes servers. That is why it can take a while for a video you upload to be available.

And this is obviously a scam. They make you think there is a problem so you click the ad.

Ah, OK, @johnpowell. I didn’t know that.
Thank you all, my fellow jellies, for your warnings.

I disagree with these answers. I believe it is trying to get you to download a converter which would allow you to copy youtube videos to your hard drive. I would NOT click on anything such as what you describe though. However, a video converter is a nice thing to have on your PC. I use VideoSoft.

@MollyMcGuire Now that I took a closer look at the ad, it IS about something to convert the YouTube video and save it on the hard drive. So, how do you like VideoSoft?

@2davidc8 I like it fine; I don’t use it often but when I need it, it’s there.
