Who would you consider your top five female vocalists?

Asked by OpryLeigh (25305points) June 1st, 2014

From any genre or decade but, if possible, please answer based on the voice rather than their music. Special mentions welcome if you can’t quite narrow it down to a list of five!

Mine are Barbra Streisand, Judith Durham, Joan Baez, Reba McEntire and Patsy Cline.

Special mentions to Patti Russo and a Dusty Springfield.

Looking at iTunes sorted by “Number of Plays” I see:

Merrill Garbus
Nina Simone
Anita O’Day
Fiona Apple
Ella Fitzgerald

That would be based on about six months’ listening (I re-formatted my computer and that’s how far back the iTunes history goes).

If I had more history, these ladies would also be near the top:

Neko Case
Emmylou Harris
Patti Smith
Joni Mitchell

Wow, watching Johnny Cash show clips makes me so sad with nostalgia. Look at the fantastic guest list. Today we get the Kardashians instead:-(

Here’s Johnny and Joni

OMG. I missed BOTH Patsy and Ella!

Honerable mention to June Carter Cash – Please include the hilarious 50’s clips where she tells jokes before her number.

I stand behind my #1.
