How do you feel when someone shows a brutal animal abuse video on Facebook?

Asked by Aster (20023points) June 18th, 2014

I know it’s not about me. It’s about the poor, suffering animals. But I woke up in a good, calm mood and someone had put a video of teen boys beating dogs with baseball bats on Facebook and I was this close to renouncing my belief in God. I was so shaken and tearful that no, I didn’t enlarge it or keep watching it. I cannot imagine what I would be capable of doing had I been there. I would probably attack the boys with a rage I’ve never felt before and dialed 911.
Does this sort of video tear you apart too ? Does it test your faith in God?

Hungry.

It’s annoying because I go on Facebook to look at pictures of my friends’ babies, discuss upcoming events with other members of my club, and generally bullshit around with online acquaintances.

If I wanted to watch animals being beaten, I’m sure I could easily Google a fetish site devoted to such practices.

I don’t use FB anymore but I am opposed to foisting graphic content on others. I am a major animal lover and am already well aware of the cruel atrocities perpetrated against animals. I don’t need to see the evil up close and personal for it to effect me.
I KNOW that people skin, burn, starve, beat and pour concrete into pipes with kittens in them.

I didn’t fall off the freaking Turnip truck yesterday. Keep your sensationalism to yourself thanks. All it does is make me cry and there isn’t a damn thing I can do about abuse that’s already taken place.

^ Yeah! That!

Same as I do here when someone posts some political screed and doesnt really care what others think. (You know who I mean).

I ignore the person

I agree with @Coloma. Of course there is abuse in the world. I don’t need to see proof of it to know that it happens or to be bothered that it exists. But if there is nothing I can do about it, then it isn’t going to consume me, and I’m certainly not going to seek out visual evidence of it. No one that I know posts such things on their Facebook feeds, and if they did, I would treat it as I do inspirational posters, religious tracts, and other things of their ilk: click the dropdown arrow, and select “Hide all from [whoever originally shared this thing with my friend].” And go on with life.

I don’t know why they do it. They’ll post pictures of disfigured children along with some story about it. I read a plea on Snopes once to please not pass that along. Often the stories are made up, but the pictures are real pictures of somebody’s kids, used without permission.

No, it never tests my faith in God (which is not Faith per se but utter certainty) when people exercise their God-given gift of Free Will.

However, I do not enjoy seeing people act like buffoons nor do I like to see cruelty to anything.

Honey, I’ve been through all that. I’ve heard everything there is to hear. You can’t tell me anything new.
My life gets eased (and harder, then eased, then harder) exactly like it did before. There is no difference.
Anyway, I kinda wish you hadn’t brought it up. Kind of derailed this thread.

Some of those posts of the abused animals just….floor me. They are SO horrible, how can they stand to even look at them over and over and over again, which is what happens when they share them.

I had a devote Christian friend (back when I was a Christian too) who was rabidly opposed to abortion. She was always marching and gathering and blah blah blah. At one point she showed me some pins that they had made up that featured the dismembered corpse of a baby that had been about 3 months along. It was so horrifying. How could they go around looking at that on each other??

I don’t watch any of them. What for? I don’t need a lesson on how not to spend my day.

I like what someone said….the abuse has already happened. Why promote it?

Whew! For a minute I read that as [God says].

I don’t like to see animals suffer.

Coloma's avatar

@CWOTUS I think animals evoke some extra compassion because they are so completely innocent, like children. I don’t like to see anything abused but at least an adult human can find understanding and get psychological council where an animal only knows pain and fear without the ability to comprehend that their abusers are sick fucks that don’t know any better, or worse, sociopaths that enjoy seeing suffering. At least humans can comprehend other humans gone wrong, animals cannot.
I like to see myself as a good communicator and grounded human but I have no doubt that I could pick up a rock and bash someones head in if I came across abuse in action against an animal or child.
