Is the show "Community" as good as people say?

Asked by longgone (19540points) June 21st, 2014

Is it worth watching? I just watched a few minutes on iTunes, and it seemed a little over-the-top. Silly. Some teacher used a dart to sedate a student…

I watched it a few times and it didn’t grab me as anything much.

XOIIO's avatar

I enjoyed it a lot, especially the paintball fights. Not sure how the current seasons are.

I thinks it’s a great show. Very funny if your sense of humor leans toward the skewed side.

It’s great. The first few times I tuned in, I didn’t stay long enough to really get it. But start from the first few episodes, and you’ll begin to see why it became such a cult classic. These people live in a twisted reality that is all their own. And the tribute episodes are incredible – not just the paintball ones, but they do full episodes dedicated to specific films or genres (Goodfellas, Law and Order, My Dinner With Andre, Hearts of Darkness, Ken Burns documentaries, etc., etc., etc.)

Okay. That does sound good. I’ll watch a few episodes, and then make up my mind. Thanks, kind jellies!

@longgone Let me know; maybe I should revisit it.

^ I’ll post an update later on. I’m babysitting a bunch of teens tonight, and as they won’t be needing me much, I’m getting ready for a marathon… :)

By the way, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8aKjZP89v8

edited, had the wrong one, still not the one I’m thinking of but it’s pretty good.

longgone's avatar

Well, great. I watched half of the first episode, decided I’d take a chance, and bought the first season on Amazon (Video on Demand). Turns out the teenagers’ flat doesn’t have a stable internet connection, and Amazon doesn’t let me download because I don’t have an iPhone or Kindle. Come on.

I was really looking forward to my marathon. And I’m almost through with my book :/

@XOIIO Heehee, thanks!

XOIIO's avatar

@longgone If you like it, it will definitely be a marathon, I watched the fist 3 or 4 seasons, however many were out in a week, maybe a week and a half. (I have a lot of free time)

^ I have all day tomorrow :]

In the first season, the writing is very quick and clever. One of my favorite scenes:

Duncan: I’m a Professor. You can’t talk to me that way!
Jeff Winger: A 6 year old girl could talk to you that way!
Duncan: Yes, because that would be adorable.
Jeff Winger: No, because you’re a 5 year old girl and there’s a pecking order!

Also, there’s the blink-and-you-miss-it Fawlty Towers reference between Duncan, Abed and Winger that makes me laugh every time I see it.

Six episodes in, don’t want to stop. The glimpses I got before I started really watching reminded me of “Scrubs”, but I can now see that the two are not alike at all. I love that you need to be watching attentively to catch references and jokes. I also love that the Spanish room is decorated with Italian flags. Gotta run, watch more!! Thank you!

Jeff: I’m saying, you’re a football player. It’s in your blood!
Troy: That’s racist.
Jeff: Your soul.
Troy: That’s racist.
Jeff: Your eyes?
Troy: That’s gay?
Jeff: That’s homophobic.
Troy: That’s black.
Jeff: That’s racist.

Wonderful.

Ok – I’m sold. Will try it again.

dappled_leaves's avatar

@janbb You wouldn’t take my word for it? I am wounded. :/

@longgone Really glad you’re enjoying it! I’m jealous that you get to see it for the first time.

longgone's avatar

@janbb Please do! It takes some getting used to, but I’ve laughed out loud several times already, and I’m already thinking about buying the second season.

@dappled_leaves Wish I had the common sense to spread it out for a while. Knowing my history, I’ll be through next week.

And now, no asking any good questions for a while, please….because I’m busy ;)

dappled_leaves's avatar

Haha. Do me a favour and come back and watch this fanvid between seasons 1 and 2.

And someday, we’ll have to talk easter eggs.

longgone's avatar

Intrigued… ^^

Will do! ;)

Blueroses's avatar

I also really appreciate how the show treats Abed’s Asberger’s.
He’s not a token “very special character”. His unique perspective is valued and necessary for the group’s dynamic.

Blueroses's avatar

@dappled_leaves, great link! Joel McHale is hot and sexy and snarky (as I like my men) but that video reminds me of the depth he gives to the character of Jeff.

longgone's avatar

Done with the first season – I knew I’d be hooked. I’m still loving it, and you were right – the paintball episode was great!

@dappled_leaves Your link can’t be watched in my country :/ And I will gladly talk easter eggs with you. I bet I miss a ton of them.

@Blueroses Re:Aspberger’s, I agree. Very well done!

longgone's avatar

Oh, is it true that there’s going to be a sixth season?

Blondesjon's avatar

Yep. Yahoo picked it up like Netflix did with Arrested Development.

dappled_leaves's avatar

It had to happen. #sixseasonsandamovie

@longgone Sucks that you couldn’t see the original fanvid!! I don’t think there’s another one out there, but I’ll have a look around.

talljasperman's avatar

Yes… Six seasons and a movie. Where the truth comes out, hopefully who the characters are based on.

longgone's avatar

Yay, that’s great!
@dappled_leaves Thanks, please do! :)

longgone's avatar

Well, I’m done, and very grateful to you jellies! I had a lot of fun, and I’m already looking forward to re-watching all episodes :)

dappled_leaves's avatar

Very pleased to hear it, @longgone! I was just considering doing a Christmas episode marathon recently. :)

longgone's avatar

^ Want to get together for that? :]

You owe me some easter eggs!

dappled_leaves's avatar

Haha! True. Should I make you wait until Easter? ;)

dappled_leaves's avatar

Ok, well the absolute best ones are:

Abed helping a student give birth in the background of the episode The Psychology of Letting Go. Look at the background action in pretty much the whole episode. It’s amazing. If you count back 9 months, the baby was conceived during the episode The Politics of Human Sexuality, when Abed announces at the STD fair that students should not use condoms if they have sex.

The Beetlejuice running gag – recall from the film that he appears if his name is said three times. In three separate episodes, a character randomly references Beetlejuice, and on the third mention, he appears walking by in the background.

The montage of Jeff and Annie (and later Pierce and Abed) set to “Gravity” in Paradigms of Human Memory was inspired by this real Jeff/Annie fanvid.

And then, there are the allusions to Britta’s disturbing childhood incident with a man in a dinosaur suit.

There are LOTS more, but I’ve listed some of the cooler ones here:

Season 1

Intro to Film – Check out the moves the martial arts students are doing when Jeff says “I don’t want to be your father”.

Physical Education – Look at the people in the background while Werewolves of London plays during the pool match (the song is from this famous pool scene in The Color of Money)

Season 2

Cooperative Calligraphy – Annie’s Boobs steals Annie’s pen on camera at the beginning of the episode.

Critical Film Studies – Abed really did have a cameo on Cougar Town around the time of this episode, as he recounts during his dinner with Jeff.

Season 3

Remedial Chaos Theory – Troy and Abed’s fridge is dressed up like a vending machine… take a closer look, near the bottom (a reference to when Troy and Abed got stuck in a vending machine in a Season 1 episode).

Lupine Urology – did you catch the Law and Order reference in the episode title?

Season 5

Analysis of Cork-Based NetworkingPossible Troy sighting

Wow, thank you!! I’m checking those out for sure, and I hope my re-watching will let me discover some on my own :]
