Will you be watching the World Cup this weekend, and want to chat about it?

Asked by hearkat (22917points) July 12th, 2014

We’ve opened up a chat room for those who want to discuss futbol/football/soccer! Come on in and join in. We know that some interactions between fans of competing teams can get pretty heated, but let’s keep it civil here – we’re all part of the Jelly collective!

Does the World Cup ever come to an end? Or do teams compete forever?

hearkat's avatar

@gailcalled – Today, at 4:00 p.m. EDT is the consolation match between the host country Brazil and the Netherlands, to determine 3rd and 4th place.

Tomorrow is the Finals between Germany and Argentina at 3:00 p.m. EDT.

I’ve only seen a couple of questions regarding this topic & from what I can recall, all seemed perfectly civil.

@ucme – They have been. We have a mostly civilized group of Jellies.

However, in live chat during the game, the pace of typing and submitting ones commentary is much faster and there’s no editing. It’s human nature to get caught up in the heat of the moment, so I just wanted to ask people to remember that this is Fluther and not some random internet chat site.

Will you be staying up late to watch the games live? I bet the Dutch and Germans are annoyed by the time difference. I wonder whether businesses in Germany are closed on Monday because they know so many people will be up late watching the game.

@hearkat The game tonight kicks off at 9:00pm gmt, not late for a saturday night & yeah, i’ll probably tune in.
Definitely be watching the final tomorrow night, rooting for Argentina who I picked as winners from the start, think i’ll be giving the chatroom a miss though.
It’s not a bad idea but I can’t multitask…much.

I hope Argentina will win.

hearkat's avatar

If that happens, do you think the German public will go berserk, @ragingloli?

I have a friend from Argentina and so will be rooting for her team, but I don’t have the slightest intention of doing anything more than checking the score afterwards.

My wife and her family are from Argentina, so… GO ARGENTINA!!

And in related news, Brazil is already behind the Netherlands 0:2.
*japanese accent: What a shameful display!

3:0.
Oh man. What happened to you, Brazil?

cookieman's avatar

^ They were so disheartened from the beating they took from Germany, they couldn’t muster the energy to care.

Third place, fourth place… whatever.

Since Brazil’s catastrophic performance – talk about shooting oneself in the foot – I have lost interest in the World Cup. Argentina versus Germany? Bah! There are stronger expressions but this is a respectable forum.

All that happened was Brazil were again found out as a very poor side, my 3–1 prediction almost came off.

Even though I used to play soccer in college, and even though I’ve coached both of my kids’ teams (at the same time, too, and let me tell you, that’s a trick), and even though I was also the commissioner of the youth soccer league at the same time… I don’t particularly enjoy watching soccer.

In fact, the only thing more boring to me than watching soccer is… talking about watching soccer. So I’ll take a pass, but I hope you have a good time.

@CWOTUS my daughter is the same way. She played both competitive club soccer and on the high school team, followed by a stint in the adult league and now she coaches her daughters team and a team of 12 y.o. boys yet she hates to sit and watch a game. She wants to play, not observe.
Although, she will watch a game with Brazil just to point out to the ref all the dives and fake injuries (I have tried to point out that the ref really can’t hear her but she does not seem to understand). She detests them. She thinks they are such good players for the most part and that they ruin the game and their own credibility by faking injuries and throwing themselves to the ground trying to draw a foul on such a regular and predictable basis (“He should fall down riiiiiiiiiiight about…..........NOW!, Yep, there he goes!).
