Did you enjoy it? What did you do? Did you keep to yourself or make friends along the way?

I went on a great vacation. I was looked down upon at first but, met some terrific people. I’m rather enjoying the vacation!

Yes. Yes! Remarkably little, which was kind of the point. Yes, but probably only because the locals were extremely frosty to outsiders.

I guess you could say I’m about to. I’ll let you know how it goes.

I went on a trip to the Dolly Sods Wilderness in WV. Camped alone in a hammock above the tree line. Kept pretty much to myself, except helped band birds one day. Time alone when I first got sick to ready myself for the chemo. Then chemo wasn’t all as bad as I thought it would be.

No, but I would like to some day.

I suppose business trips don’t count.

Yes, a few times.

In 1988 I went to Boston for a weekend and then a week long bike tour in Vermont by myself, although the tour was a tour group. But still I didn’t know anybody. And then I spent 10 days right after at Lake Tahoe by myself.

And just last November I spend five nights in Manhattan by myself.

So I am confident that I am quite capable of enjoying myself on vacation alone, But I will be honest, I do not prefer it. For me, shared experience is multiplicative, not additive.

A couple of solo long motorcycle treks. It was great. I have also done several solo backpacking trips. While not the best idea they were still fun.

Nothing huge but I have taken off for a little overnight get away to the beach or mountains a few times. I have taken off solo on adventures in a foreign country much to the anger of my over protective and timid friends. I like adventures and am a pretty fearless personality, short of the physical these days as I get older.

Yes. Paul and I had booked a trip to the beach. At the last minute, some work emergencies prevented him from going. It was too late to cancel or reschedule, so I went by myself. I did miss Paul, but I had a great time regardless. I’m a classic Myers-Briggs introvert; I enjoy my own company, never get bored, and can find plenty of things to do.

One summer I was footloose and funded, so I took off in the car one day. Mexico (just to say I did), the Grand Canyon and Vegas. Basically, I’ve never seen the Southwestern US, so I took myself on a tour. It was a blast, and I loved every minute of it. I chatted people up, but didn’t really make “friends” with any. A few weeks later I drove myself to Niagara Falls (Land of the Rude). I had car trouble on Canada, and when I got moving, I drove straight from Canada to Missouri without ever shutting the car off. I had to fuel someplace I could pee and get food. Not such a good time, but hell, it beat sitting on my butt around the house. :)

@ibstubro I have flown in and seen Arizona and I drove to Colorado a few times but I have never “toured” the southwest. It’s on my short list of things to do solo soon. I’ll be taking my bike and camping along the way. I intended to do that before I got married, then before graduating college for the second time, then after getting promoted… Still has not happened yet.

Honestly, @ARE_you_kidding_me, it was the most impressive trip of my lifetime. Make sure you stop in Flagstaff…I swear there was not so much as a cigarette butt on the ground and even the fast food workers acted like they knew me from high school. I liked to imagine I was an early settler, coming from Europe, or the East coast, never having seen a picture of the Canyon or the colors. The gray old Moonscape pales in comparison.

Not a camper, I slept the night in my car 2–3 times. Of course, I had no idea how cold the desert gets at night. Oh, and speaking of cold, I came back through a pass in the mountains that had, like, 3’ of snow, and me in a Cutlas. Made it through, pulled into the 1st motel I saw, and the couple ahead of me had the choice of the room with no phone, and the one with no TV. I got the last room at the Inn.

YES! I have traveled alone, and it was much better than with one other person!

I did a 2 week southwesterm road trip in 2006. I am near the Nevada border near Lake Tahoe and went all through Nevada, Utah, Az. N.M. and Colorado. It was a blast.

Yes. It’s a sabbatical and it doesn’t work unless you are alone.
