Purple Hair Dye?

Asked by trumi (6491points) July 8th, 2008

I really want a permanent purple hair dye. Does this even exist? I’ve looked at Manic Panic, Special Effects, Herbatint – all seem semi-permanent. Any suggestions? Past experience? If no Permanent purple hair dyes exist, which is the best semi-permanent?

You don’t want it. Trust me.

Besides, how can any hair dye be permanent? Your natural hair color will just grow underneath it.

Here is the site for you. Lots of leads, although the site has this to say:

“One of the most frequent questions to be asked at this page is “Where can I get really bright colours (green, pink, blue, orange, purple, etc) that are REALLY PERMANENT?”. The problem is that although it’s possible to get really good hair colours, it’s been an ongoing quest to find any that don’t wash out. There is a definite demand for such products, and I urge chemical companies to look into the practicality of the technology!”

If your hair is blondish, just get an “aubergine” permanent colour. Did the trick for me. Schwarzkopf’s Live has a dark purple-ish colour. It would work.

If your hair is dark, you could just bleach first. Although if that’s a big change, you probably should get it done professionally.

From someone who has gone the spectrum when it comes to hair color, bleach your hair first. Nothing is totally permanent. But just know, when you want a change, your hair might be damaged or require some major cutting. If you are young, or have a career that allows such things, go all the way. When you grow up, expressing yourself in these ways will not be so easy.

I would definitely check out Sally’s beauty supply if you have one near you. They sell professional stuff and they have crazy colored dyes and everything.

I dyed my hair purple once and unfortunatly I had to bleach it. Thats the best way to make it stand out. Oh, and I used manic panic. Special fx doesn’t work as well. Also make sure to get the special manic shampoo/ conditioner to keep it longer.

I second Sally’s beauty supply. In my early 20’s I decided I wanted to dye my hair purple and that’s where I went. I never did it though because the sales girl told me I’d have to bleach my dark hair blonde first or it wouldn’t show up.

I have no problem bleaching (actually I plan on it), its just finding the dye. I guess the conclusion is that permanent purple doesn’t exist, so I’ll test out Manic Panic and Special FX. I don’t think I have a Sally’s near me…
Whole point of the permanent is cost, so I’ll skip on actually going to a professional.
Thanks for the help!

Sally’s doesn’t have permanent extreme colors, I’ve dyed my hair purple for years now, the best I found is RAW from Hot Topic, and yeah, you gotta bleach your hair first if you want it to look good.

Haha.. I’m looking for purple-blue hair dye. I’m thinking about coloring the underneath part. So anyway, I googled “purple dye for dark hair” and this came up. Good ol’ Fluther.

I dye my hair purple all the time with manic panic purple haze. Depending on the mood i mix it with ultra violet to get a more intense color, more with a blueish hint to it. I wish I could find a permanet color that was a true purple. I have really dark hair, its practically black and I personally bleach my hair and put in the color. I think bleaching it is the only way for extreme colors to vibrantly come thru on dark hair.

I realized how awful I would look with purple-blue hair. I’m sticking to my natural hair color.
