Do you lie about your height?

Asked by JeSuisRickSpringfield (8238points) August 21st, 2014

I just found out that a friend’s father lies about his height. My friend was insisting that I’m six feet tall because her father is six feet tall and we’re exactly the same height. We are exactly the same height, by the way, but we’re both 5’10”.

So I was wondering: do you add a little or subtract a little from your height? And if you do, why? Also, I’d be interested in whether you identify as male, female, neither, or something else (just to see if there is a pattern).

I know this is a question about lying, but try to be honest! I’ll go first: I’m actually 5’9¾”, but I round up to 5’10” because it sounds better (and not just because it’s easier to say).

Depending on the father’s age, he may have been six feet tall. Many people don’t realize just how much height they lose due to aging. My dad is not more than 2 inches shorter than he used to be.

There’s not much to lie about with my height. On a good day, I’m 5’1”, but usually 5’ ½”.

Isn’t it kind of hard to fake tall?

JeSuisRickSpringfield's avatar

@syz He’s 50. And I don’t think he’s ever been six feet tall.

@Adirondackwannabe It’s easier if you’re just faking an inch or two. I doubt anyone’s lying about a whole foot.

I am 5’ 7¾”; I proclaim myself 5’ 8”. it’s within the margin of error and if I am standing straight and wearing good shoes.

I did lose about an inch from age 30 to age 50. I used to be almost 5’ 9’; when I had a physical at age 50 the height reduction was the most upsetting thing.

I don’t consider rounding up a 1.4 inch to be lying.
I’m 5’ ¾ths too and usually say I am 5’4 or a little under 5’4. I might have shrunk some now too at almost 55, I don’t know, I haven’t measured myself forever. haha

I’m a 6’1” male and have never lied about it, nor felt the need to.

And that’s the long and short of it.

I’d never lie about my height. I’m honestly 6’10” tall.

For me it would be rather pointless. I’m 5’2” so adding an inch or two wouldn’t do much when I have to use a step stool so frequently :)

I’ve always believed I was 5’6” but at my last health check I was 5“5. So either I’ve been lying for 25 years or I’ve shrunk an inch.

Tsk, what a tall story :)

No. Really…if I’m going to lie, it will be for a good reason.

What for? I love being tall at 5’8”.

@Coloma I don’t consider rounding up ¼” to be lying, either. I just thought I should be completely honest if I’m going to ask others to be. But my friend’s father is rounding up 2¼” inches, so he’s clearly fibbing at least a little bit.

@Darth_Algar How’s the weather up there? ~

I never lie about it. It wouldn’t surprise me if some short people lie a little smidge and round up. I’m not even sure if it is a lie if it is just for simplicity. You know how when you are little you say you are five and a half years old, like every day of your living existance counts down to the minute. After a while you stop using the half. More words, takes more time, not very important. If someone rounds up a half an inch just because it’s simpler so what. The dad might have been just over 5’11” at one point and shrank a little.

I’m a female, 5’ 4”. My Dad used to be slightly taller than me, but slightly shorter than my Mom who is 5’ 6”. Now Dad is shorter than me by about 2 inches. He’s 88. His brother, my Uncle, aged 93, is about 4’ 11”. On the other hand, my brother is 6’ and all of my relatives on my Mom’s side are very tall, both males and females.

No. I am 5 foot 9. I do know a few guys that would say that they were 5 foot 10, and then when I stand next to them, they’re shorter than I am.

There’s no getting around it, I’m 5’3”, and that’s that. For a couple of yaers or so, I lied a bit. I said I was 5’3” but was only 5’2½”. Along the way, I gained that extra half inch to even things out. Pleasant surprise for me during routine checkup to find I had crept up a bit like that.
I was an exceptionally tiny child, not only short, but very small features to match. It was as if I had been born through Wonkavision. It bothered me a lot, until somewhere around the end of high school when other developments sort of made up for it. :- )
Female, and okay now with my height.

I don’t; but I found that it is common among men from when I did online dating. It was common, and I never understood the reasoning of lying about something when the truth will be evident immediately when meeting. Why would you want to date a woman that is so shallow as to have height requirements? Tome it was a sign of desperation and low self-esteem.

@JeSuisRickSpringfield I bet he rounds up his penis size by several inches too, lol
