Asked by 2TFX (435points) August 22nd, 2014

I see this sometimes with boys and some men at the beach. is there any other reason for this besides protection from the sun.

Why is this question specifically about boys and men?

To avoid a sunburn.
A history of skin cancer.
Don’t want more freckles.
To protect a tattoo from fading.
Body image issues.
To hide a scar.
They’re on the “shirts” team.
Don’t like the feel of sand.
Protection from jellies.

Next month I’ll be in Hawaii snorkeling and I’ll be sure to wear a long sleeve t-shirt in the water (also a swim cap) to protect my skin from the sun’s harmful rays.

Last June a mole was removed from my arm. Two weeks later I was told that I have melanoma cancer. Two days ago the dermatologist did more slicing and dicing on my arm. I now have a 5cm long wound with 30 stitches.
