Can anyone define this scary illness I had?

Asked by Aster (20023points) September 3rd, 2014

This is Wednesday. On Sunday night, I believe, I began feeling slightly anxious. And cold. I got in bed and the shaking began. My teeth were chattering, my head and hands were shaking and I was just shaking all over. Only a grand mal seizure could have looked worse. In half an hour it rapidly subsided. I took off some of the quilts and turned on the tv. In an hour I went to sleep then had a fitful night of fever. I wish I had had a thermometer. Next day I was up and not tired but had a nice day and Monday night I slept really well . Has one single other person ever had this illness ? If I had to guess I’d say it was caused by a bad tooth I’m having looked at next week.

omg I had almost the exact same thing this weekend, a fever struck me out of the blue on Saturday afternoon. I was worse on Sunday, swinging from freezing cold to burning hot, couldn’t even eat (and for me that’s really bad as I’m prone to hypoglycaemia; I almost passed out from that on the Monday evening). But by Tuesday morning I was totally back to normal again. It was like a flu-sort of fever, but without the associated cold/flu symptoms, and gone as suddenly as it started. I chalked it down to some mutation of a cold or flu virus.

Interesting. I couldn’t stand up or talk. You had it a whole lot longer than I did. I was only sick for a couple hours at best. My hands were twisting as fast as possible from right to left like trying to open a round doorknob at top speed. Like a severe case of Parkinson’s. I could have died and not even cared just to be able to be still .
The scariest part is not knowing how long the shaking would last and if I’d damage some muscles.

Any chance it could be some form or reaction to food poisoning?

^^^ Sure; I suppose there’s a chance but we ate at home and I never got nauseated.

Sounds like a virulent bug for sure. I’ve seen a few cases lately of rapid temperature spikes with chills, only to subside in a few hours. Just one more of the hundreds of viruses floating around!

The shakes are called rigors or chills and are the body’s reaction to a virus or bacterial infection, then the high temperature is the body fighting it off. You got better so quickly, it was possibly just a mild virus. But the fact that you have the toothache is a bit worrying since it might suggest the infection has spread a little. Could you phone your dentist and tell him/her?

^^^^^ thank you. Yes; I called a new dentist and have an appointment next week. I am also on Cipro, 500mg 2x daily. So it doesn’t hurt but it’s beige!
