Why don't they make songs about breasts? (NSFW?)

Asked by chelle21689 (7907points) September 4th, 2014

Silly question, but they always make songs about big butts but you never hear any songs about breasts. Why is that?

Not much rhymes with titty except itty and bitty?

Anyone remember the Pixies, an alternative rock band from the 1980s. The group had a semi-hit song, “Gigantic”?

The lead singer (who also wrote the song and plays a distinctive bass guitar) is fantasizing about an African American man and his enormous, um, attributes. Let’s just say that “Gigantic” doesn’t mean he’s tall. I’m still amazed that the song, with rather daring lyrics, made it to AM/FM radio:

Lovely legs they are
What a big black mess
What a hunk of love
He’s like the dark, but I want him

Hilariously, Apple recently used “Gigantic” in a recent TV commercial. I guess nobody at the corporation or its advertising firm had bothered to listen to the song’s lyrics?

The old Bob Seger song, “Night Moves,” had a couple of lines about breasts:

She was a black-haired beauty with big dark eyes
And points of her own, sitting way up high
Way up firm and high

@SadieMartinPaul I wondered about the same thing when Microsoft used “Start Me Up” for Windows 95.

Did no one listen and realize that it says “You make a grown man cry”? Of course maybe they focused on the line “You make a dead man come”

@chelle21689 It might be the genre of music you listen to and cultural differences. A lot of young people listen to hip hop and hip hop is dominated by black singers, and black people tend to be more focused on butts than breasts. It’s a generalization that will have lots of exceptions I’m sure, but that’s my theory anyway. Latin Americans also are butt oriented while white people tend to be more focused on tits, but it is shifting a little.

Of course, it’s Kim Deal. Probably 75% of her songs are about cock.

@darth So, you remember the fabulous Kim Deal! The Pixies are still out there, mostly doing European tours, but Kim left the band last year. I’ve read that she’s been working on a solo career. I wonder if her songs continue to be phallic-centric?

She’s released a handful of singles as a solo artist, but mostly she’s been active with the Breeders (who are touring and working on new material right now). Frankly she’s better off without the Pixies, as they’ve never really allowed her to shine like she can (I think maybe Frank Black’s always been afraid of being upstaged by her).

SadieMartinPaul's avatar

@Darth_Algar Frank Black (now Black Francis, an interesting choice for a white guy who resembles Uncle Fester) kept Kim at the rear of the stage and relegated her to backup singer. Yet, Kim was always the one who would shine.

There’s just something so cool about a rocker-chick in her mid-50s, moving on to new opportunities (isn’t her twin sister also with the Breeders?).

Indeed. ‘Gigantic’ is the best thing the Pixies ever recorded. You know it, I know it, Kurt Cobain knew it, Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson IV knows it, everyone knows it.

Indeed she is. To this day I’ve got a big ol’ crush on Kim and Kelly that started when I first saw the ‘Cannonball’ video. And I would endanger my marriage for ether one of them.

@Darth_Algar I think we should each send a “fan” mail letter to Frank Black/Black Francis and put “Dear Charlie” or maybe “Dear Chuck” in the salutation.
