Is this not hypocritical of Congress? Details within.

Asked by rojo (24179points) September 11th, 2014

I heard this morning that Congress is questioning the leadership ability of the NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. To quote one article on the subject:
”(Sen. Richard) Blumenthal said in a statement Wednesday night. The current leadership of the NFL cannot be trusted to fairly, genuinely implement policies…..”
They also talk of a “burgeoning, insurmountable credibility gap”.

Seriously, how can anyone in Congress, particularly this Congress, question the ability of anyone to lead anything, let alone talk of a credibility gap of anyone else, without addressing their own incompetence and single digit approval rating?

I suspect you’re committing tu quoque.

That said, it always surprises me when government comments on sports. Football is a business and a game, right? Guys in costumes and tights smash into other guys wearing different colored costumes and tights. If someone in the NFL has broken a law, then we may have an interest in making sure appropriate criminal charges have been filed. But comments from congress stating that “Goodell must go” seem absurd. If my elected official starts making commentary about sports or movie directors or video game designers, I will suspect s/he is not doing the job I had hoped.

I agree that no member of Congress is in any position to issue declarations of incompetence. But on another note, it’s my understanding that Goodell receives a salary of $44 million dollars a year. The author of the email apprising me of this fact believes that Condoleeza Rice is angling for the job of commissioner of the NFL, and is actively involved in the agitation to unload Goodell. Has anyone else heard anything about this?

It’s not hypocritical for a Member of Congress to say that, because they don;t view that overall approval rating to be about them, but more about the Congress as a whole. And particularly in the Senate, it’s about the obstructionists on the other side of the aisle.

Apparently the NFL doesn’t make campaign contributions.

Just finished a MPA and learned that this Congress will be going down in history for being the most obstructionist congress ever! Not only are they taking advantage of taxpayer dollars with their infamous lawsuits and “shutting down government” tactics, but also are renown for not passing ANY legislation presented to them, even the no brainers….
