Do you find that you spend on things you usually don’t think of if you have extra cash to do so?

Do you find that if you had extra cash or the means to purchase things, you find yourself doing so? You may thought it would be nice to have, but you do not dwell on it because it doesn’t fit the budget, but if you find that you can fit it in the budget, even if tightly, then you think more about buying it more then when you did not really have the money to do so.

No. I haven’t been an impulse shopper ever. I never did see the thrill in it. Once a decade I buy something high end but it usually lasts forever. 11 years ago I bought a $400 Italian black leather jacket…it’s still going strong and will probably outlive me.

@gailcalled, I’m about to one-up you. I have a denim skirt that I bought 40 years ago. And, yes, it fits!!!

@SadieMartinPaul: Oh, I have ancient garments too but they’re not very attractive any more. Pilled, faded, droopy or best worn only when painting the house.

Extra cash in my pocket? No, not at all. How much cash I have on me has no influence at all on whether I buy something.

More money in savings over time has freed me up a little to buy things I might have passed up on previously. I rarely buy things on a whim, or that aren’t necessary. Necessary being a relative term. I have lots of things that I don’t need to live, but usually I spend quite a bit of time contemplating if I want to spend the money on it, and I shop around for a good price, and I don’t buy a lot of things that I see that I like. I’m almost never an impulsive shopper, but as I get older and have more descretionary income I am a little loser, and easier on myself about the spending.

Look up the phrase “Impulse buyer” and you’ll see my avatar.

No. I have an impulse to put extra money on our mortgage or into our investment account.

I was raised by two children of the depression, one of whom was a banker. Saving, wise use of credit, investing, etc. were taught early in our home.

I am going above impulse buying where something catches your eye and you buy, that can happen whether or not you have a budget or not. I am thinking more on purchasing things you actually thought about buying for some time but they were not important enough to go out and spend money on, but if one came into extra cash then those items get purchased because they can without as much effect on the budget as if there were no extra to spend on them.

I’ll let you know as soon as I have some extra cash.

@Hypocrisy_Central: I don’t usually think about shopping and discretionary income like that. I have always had a budget and stayed within it. If I have a windfall, I then make the decision of how to spend it…I bought a hydrangea on a whim last week but it was low-ticket and will benefit more than me. My leather jacket was not an impulse purchase, just an unusual one. I was stealing from Peter to pay Paul.
