What happens when someone releases your cell phone number?

I have a cell phone through my future ex husband, Today he text me and told me he released my phone number? Does this mean my phone is going to stop working? Or what does it mean exactly? Thank you !

If he dropped the service, it means it is about to go dead.

If all he did was release the number, it means you can transport it to another carrier, or you can sign up for your own account with the same number. Ask him to please clarify.
