How to disable those pesky red number notifications on the App Store?

Asked by AshlynM (10684points) September 22nd, 2014

I don’t see an option to disable this in settings. I banished the App Store to the second page so I wouldn’t have to see those annoying numbers. I don’t really wish to update my apps, I assume this is the only way to get rid of the notifications from the App Store. Is there any other way around this?

Those “pesky red numbers” are called “badges”. You turn them off by going to Settings, then touch “Notification Center” on the left side. Find your app on the right side. The app could be either in the INCLUDE or DO NOT INCLUDE section. Touch that app and turn “Badge App Icon” off. VoilĂ ! The pesky red number is gone.

Oops. I just realized my instructions are for the iPad. No matter. The procedure is similar for the iPhone.

^^ works except for Apps, Settings (shows when there is an iOS update), and Cydia. These do not allow the badge to be turned off, and the only way to do this is to jailbreak. The tweak you want for the App Store is named “No AppStore Badges”.

@wildpotato Yes, it does work. The App Store is listed on the right side (on the iPad) under the INCLUDE section (by default). You turn the Badges off same way as the other apps.

Alternatively, under Settings, you can find “iTunes and App Store” on the left column, and turn off Automatic Updates.

I just triple-checked on both my iPad and iPhone, and I do not have either of the options you describe on either device.

I have older iThings – iPad 1 running 5.1.1 and iPhone 3 running 6.1. Perhaps what you are seeing are iOS feature updates I cannot access.

@wildpotato That must be it. I’m running iOS 7 on both the iPad and iPhone.
