When's the last time you took time 'just for yourself'?

Asked by ibstubro (18804points) September 25th, 2014

What did you do, where did you go?

Earlier this week I road-tripped to a booming college town a couple hours away and sampled unfamiliar food, shopped funky little local shops.

Why don’t we do this kind of stuff more often? It gave me a mental high.

It depends on how you mean it. I have a lot of time just for myself and just to myself, although it’s in my own home. It’s just my husband and I and we both have our own little areas. We give each other lots of space and privacy.
If you are talking outside the home, I would have to say it was….ummm…hmmm, good question.

I played 2 rounds of golf on this set off, does that count?

Sheesh, you people are high maintenance!

I went to my room in my home. I played with my cat. I listened to music. I talked on the phone. I surfed the internet. I sat and stared out the window.

Last Sunday. After work I went to a local nature park and hiked down to the river.

I kind of also consider cooking dinner to be “me time.” All the stuff I cook these days is like… salmon, kale, quinoa. But it feels like I’m starting to develop my own personal style of cooking, and that’s awesome.

And just now! I listened to “Hey Hey My My” by Neil Young. <3

Today and everyday is my time while exercising. When I’m in a workout the whole world disappears as I’m transported to another universe.

I’m working to a heap of major deadlines, so it’s been a few weeks since I’ve had a real break. By the end of today, I’ll have met two of those deadlines so I’m going to take a whole day to go and play. I’ll possibly go to the cinema, but I also fancy going for a drive to a country area to look at an artisan’s gallery. He makes the most beautiful furniture. I’m not sure which yet but I’m hoping I can persuade my husband to do the second. I need a break.

Every moment of my life is for me. I’ve made a point of building a life where the sense of doing things I don’t like for people I don’t like out of obligation is minimal. Chilling here in my bed with my kitties banning spammers from Fluther for the past hour is still me-time, in my book. I’m taking a few days off next week between closing one chapter and beginning the next, so I’ve booked a spa day that I’m looking forward to.

Next month I’m taking my annual birthday trip to one of my favorite cities to spend catch-up time with my oldest friend. If that ain’t time “just for myself” I don’t know what is.

Yesterday I used up some comp time and went mountain biking. A couple of weeks ago I went solo backpacking. Neither lasted very long but it’s just enough for me not too feel too much like i’m just living to work and run errands. I still steal time and do things like post here. I thank my smartphone for that but it’s also like a dog leash at the same time. I’m still expected to work and respond to e-mails, remote in to my equipment, etc while on vacation.

I may do it today. I’m out of work, sick but feeling better and restless. Not a good combination!

Get out, report back, @anniereborn. :) Seriously, to each his own

Golf counts, if it’s a treat, @SQUEEKY2

That’s what I’m talking about, @Haleth. I used to get a kick out of cooking too, because I was good at it. Ever heard of Lucky’s Market? It’s a small chain of grocery.

I taught myself to meditate, at one point, @gondwanalon, and it was sublime, but my need for it passed. Alas. :)

Drive to the country sound great, @Earthbound_Misfit, even though I live in the country. There’s not much I like better than a scenic drive.

Thanks, @hearkat, we’re proud that you enjoy your work here on Fluther!

Wow, @Pachy. A pachyderm has to have some really old friends! Enjoy the city!

Exactly what I meant, @ARE_you_kidding_me. It’s not the time spent so much as ‘getting out of yourself’. Enjoy.

Do a search or “things to do” in your area, @jca. I bet you find something no/low cost to do that you were unaware of.

HaHaHa! I can’t say that I always enjoy it, @ibstubro; but since I had just been performing that task, I used it as an example of my mindset to choose to invest my time doing things that I enjoy and/or care about. Thus, nearly every moment of every day is “me” time.

I admit to my narcissism, @hearkat, but I still enjoy taking time out for an activity that is solely for my benefit, enjoyment. I know you do a lot for others, as I try to do, but there’s something really satisfying about everything to the wind and having an unplanned adventure where you are the only motivator. :)

Actually, now I’m going for a drive to the Hinze Dam. Haven’t been out there for years and I will take some photos and have lunch. It’s too far to go to the other place but we’re going to go for a weekend soon. I hope you have a good weekend @ibstubro.

Maybe you can post some pix for us, @Earthbound_Misfit. Hope it was a great time!

I had free time today I went to the rockies and gazed at the marvelous sites

ibstubro's avatar

I’m jealous, @Bayjo98241.

Although as I age, I realize that there is beauty everywhere. I’ve been know to carry on about the ocean as viewed from Hawaii – every shade of blue that exist all within sight. In truth, we have that same range of green here in the Midwest, and our fall colors are briefly as stunning as the Southwest.

I’m glad you had free time and that you saved it fir yourself. :)
