Sports Gurus: Why was Jerry Rice so special on the field?

Asked by pleiades (6617points) September 29th, 2014

I know he was great at route running and had great hands, but I never really heard about him being a speedy or tall physically dominant receiver… How did he seem to be so open and behind corner backs and safeties on the field? (At least on his highlight tapes) was he a deep threat only kind of guy? Or did he do most of his work with more mid field receptions than up the side line?

Besides the ability to funnel in a football as if his hands were scoops, Rice had a nearly mystical ability to position himself ahead of defenders. It was almost as though they had sudden lapses in the realization that he was a threat. The other thing Rice had going for him was the greatest quarterback the game ever saw, followed by the second greatest quarterback SF ever saw

He was known for his work ethic on and off the field. Lacking exceptional physical abilities, other than his hands, he felt he had to work harder than anyone else in the game in order to succeed. He studied his craft seriously and meticulously, and no detail was too small to consider. Thanks to his training, he was quick off the line, had crisp cuts, could out-muscle DBs, ran precise routes, and had the endurance to look fresh in the 4th quarter when the defenses were starting to fatigue. He ran every route in the playbook.

I recently heard Dion Sanders reflecting on his relationship with Rice during his time with the 49ers. Sanders, being physically gifted, approached the game with levity that was in stark contrast to Rice’s seriousness. They didn’t get along well in those days.

As mentioned, catching balls from Hall of Fame quarterbacks was a big help. So was working in the West Coast offense.

Because anyone with poodle hair could outrun any defender!

I read a small biography on him once. His father was a brick layer, and he and his brother often helped. He’d have them toss him bricks, which he would catch one handed.

He could do it all when it came to receiving, & all of the above. Humble, nice guy.
